For 80 years, physics said energy in turbulence only flows one way. Scientists just made it flow backward.
Published June 3, 2026, researchers discovered a way to reverse the direction of energy flow in turbulence, overturning a theory that has stood unchallenged for more than eight decades.
Turbulence is one of the most chaotic and least understood phenomena in physics. It governs everything from the swirl of cream in your coffee to ocean currents, weather systems, blood flow, and airflow over aircraft wings. The classical theory, established in the 1940s, stated that energy in turbulence cascades in one direction: from large swirls down to progressively smaller ones, until it dissipates as heat.
This one-way cascade was considered a fundamental rule. The new research demonstrated that under specific engineered conditions, the energy flow can be reversed, cascading from small scales UP to large scales instead.
The implications are enormous. Controlling the direction of energy flow in turbulence could lead to new ways of managing ocean currents, improving medical devices that deal with fluid flow, designing more efficient engines and aircraft, and potentially even influencing weather-related systems. A rule that governed how chaos itself behaves, unbroken for 80 years, just got rewritten. And it opens the door to controlling the uncontrollable.
