A mysterious floating island covered in healthy green trees has been observed drifting in Williston Lake, a large man-made reservoir in northern British Columbia, Canada.
Local resident and boater Rocky Avery shared video footage of the unusual landmass after it was filmed by another boater.
The island measured approximately seventy meters wide and one hundred forty meters long, covering nearly ninety-eight hundred square meters, comparable in size to a Canadian football field or nearly two NFL fields.
Satellite imagery from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-2 confirmed its presence on July twenty-first two thousand twenty-six about one hundred kilometers west of the W.A.C.
Bennett Dam near Finlay Bay. It was not visible in images from days before or by early August. Officials from BC Hydro, which manages the reservoir, initially doubted the reports amid concerns over artificial intelligence generated content but verified it through satellites.
Community relations coordinator Bob Gammer explained that the formation likely developed over many years along the shoreline where driftwood and organic debris accumulated and decomposed enough for trees and vegetation to take root.
Unusually high water levels this year, the first time the reservoir reached full capacity in fourteen years due to substantial mountain snowpack and steady rains, lifted the mass free from its sheltered position. Winds then carried it into open water.
The island later vanished from satellite views, possibly returning to a shoreline cove rather than sinking, and reports suggest it may have been spotted again. BC Hydro continues monitoring but expects no impact on dam operations.
