The human body contains about 600–800 lymph nodes, although the exact number varies from person to person.
The importance of axillary lymphatic drainage lies in its role in immunity, fluid balance, and its clinical relevance in disease.
Importance of axillary lymphatic drainage
1. Drains lymph from major regions
💫 Upper limb
💫Most of the breast
💫Anterior and posterior thoracic wall
💫Upper part of the anterior abdominal wall
2. Maintains tissue fluid balance
💫Returns excess interstitial fluid and proteins to the bloodstream.
💫Helps prevent tissue swelling (edema).
3. Immune defense
💫Axillary lymph nodes filter lymph and trap bacteria, viruses, and other foreign particles.
💫They contain lymphocytes and macrophages that initiate immune responses.
4. Clinical importance in breast cancer
💫The axillary lymph nodes are the most common first site of spread of breast cancer.
💫Examination of these nodes helps determine the stage of the disease and guides treatment.
💫Sentinel lymph node biopsy is commonly performed to assess cancer spread while minimizing unnecessary node removal.
5. Significance in infections
💫Infections of the upper limb, breast, or chest wall can cause enlargement and tenderness of axillary lymph nodes (axillary lymphadenopathy).
6. Importance in surgery
💫During breast cancer surgery, axillary lymph node dissection may be required.
💫Damage to lymphatic drainage can lead to lymphedema (chronic swelling) of the upper limb.
