Some of the most amazing humans work in the ER. For Kimmy Stewart and Jae Arda, emergency nursing means staying calm under pressure, adapting to the unexpected and showing compassion for every patient who comes through the door.

During Emergency Nurses Week, we celebrate all ER nurses, including these two MUSC Health University Medical Center nurses, and the teamwork, dedication and heart they bring to their work.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re celebrating a significant milestone: The MUSC Health Brain Stimulation team has now treated more than 100 patients with SNT TMS, formerly known as SAINT TMS.

For people living with treatment-resistant depression, finding relief can be challenging. TMS offers another treatment option that is noninvasive and doesn’t require the same recovery time as some other therapies.

MUSC Health offers three TMS options, personalized to each patient’s needs: SNT TMS, Accelerated TMS and repetitive TMS.

100+ patients represents 100+ opportunities for people to find a treatment that works for them.

Behind every patient visit, treatment plan and important medical decision are physicians who deserve support too.

That's why we're especially excited to share that MUSC has earned Bronze-level recognition from the American Medical Association's Joy in Medicine® program for 2026–2027.

The recognition honors healthcare organizations working to reduce physician burnout and create healthier, more supportive workplaces.

At MUSC, that means looking at the everyday challenges our physicians encounter and finding better ways to support them in the important work they do for patients and families.

“Just because cancer happened to you, it doesn’t mean that it has to define you,” she said. “Whoever you were before you received that diagnosis, you’re still that person. You don’t have to lose your identity.”
Michelle Brown-Nelson believes there is a reason she is still here.

After being diagnosed with salivary gland cancer in 2023, the nurse, educator and adjunct professor at MUSC learned what it meant to become the patient. She underwent five surgeries, 33 radiation sessions and treatment for lingering effects that continue to shape her life.

Today, she is using what she learned to help others.

Through a book, podcast and speaking engagements, Brown-Nelson shares the realities of survivorship, from fear and changes in appearance to learning to accept help and finding purpose after treatment.

What if eating well wasn’t about following another set of food rules?

Intuitive eating focuses on listening to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, making peace with food and letting go of the cycle of restrictive dieting.

Sports dietitian Alaine Mills of the MUSC Health & Wellness Institute explains how intuitive eating can help some people build a healthier relationship with food while moving away from unrealistic diet expectations.

It’s not the right approach for everyone, but for some people, learning to listen to their bodies can be an important part of feeling healthier and happier.

When should you start getting mammograms? For many women at average risk, the answer is age 40. But your personal risk factors may mean you should start earlier or need additional screening.

Dr. Stanley Nwabudike, a medical oncologist with MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center, explains what to know about family history, genetic risk, breast symptoms and when to talk with your healthcare provider.

And remember: You don’t have to wait until you feel a lump or notice a change. Screening mammograms are designed to find breast cancer before symptoms appear.

A routine blood test changed Marshall Smith’s life.

In 2025, the 48-year-old Lady’s Island resident learned he had just 9% kidney function and would need a transplant. As he navigated dialysis, nausea and weight loss, he held onto his faith, family and church community.

Then fellow church member Russell Schaeffer turned out to be a perfect kidney match.

On April 29, Marshall and Russell became two of the first patients to undergo MUSC Health’s robotic-assisted kidney transplant procedure, South Carolina’s first program using this minimally invasive approach.

Today, Marshall is back to working full time, playing golf and enjoying time on the water with his family.

For Marshall, it’s a story of faith, friendship, generosity and medical innovation.

Today, we celebrated some very special members of our care teams: MUSC Health’s canine therapists and the volunteers who make their work possible.

At the Blessing of the Therapy Dogs, we heard from patients and care team members about the impact these dogs can have inside a hospital.

They’ve helped stop tears from falling. They’ve brought smiles to faces that haven’t smiled in a long time. They’ve offered comfort during difficult moments and given patients a chance to forget, even for a little while, that they’re in a hospital room.

For our patients and families, their presence can bring comfort. For our care teams, they can bring a welcome moment of joy during a long day.

Today was a chance to celebrate the dogs, their dedicated volunteers and the countless ways they make MUSC a more compassionate place to heal.

Amid the chaos of yesterday's I-95 50-car pileup in Santee came an unexpected moment of joy.

Kevin Cossa and Meghan Quinn were traveling south from Philadelphia for vacation when they were caught in the crash on the Santee Bridge over Lake Marion.

With traffic stopped and uncertainty all around them, Kevin decided there was no reason to wait for the perfect moment.

“I honestly, at that point in time, with so much confusion and everything going on, didn’t even know what tomorrow meant,” Kevin said.

So, right there on the bridge, he asked Meghan to marry him.

She said yes.

The couple was later treated at MUSC Health Orangeburg, where our care team learned about their special moment. We’re grateful Kevin and Meghan are doing well and wish them safe travels, a happy engagement and many years of happiness together.
