Who needs this in their life? 👆…
If you spend your day staring at screens or craning your neck under heavy barbells, you know that tight, vice-grip feeling right where your head meets your neck. Everyone says, “I hold all my stress right here,” and they aren’t wrong.
In this video, Dr. Scott is demonstrating a suboccipital release. It is one of our absolute favorite hands-on techniques at Carolina Movement Doc for wiping out stubborn tension headaches and chronic neck stiffness.
Here is what is actually happening:
Targeting the hot spot: We hook our fingers right underneath the base of the skull where your suboccipital muscles attach.
Gentle traction: By slowly applying a gentle pull backward, we elongate the cervical spine and decompress the area.
Nervous system reset: Holding this position for 1 to 2 minutes (and gently oscillating back and forth) signals your nervous system that it is safe to drop the tension and relax.
It feels so relieving that clients regularly fall asleep on the table, but more importantly, it takes the pressure off the nerves and tissues that trigger pounding headaches.
