On June 3, Windy City Times held its annual 30 Under 30 Awards at Chicago History Museum. ⁠

Every year, Windy City Times honors 30 outstanding LGBTQ+ individuals (and, occasionally, allies) who live and/or work in Chicagoland. This year, it honored 32 people who have made substantial contributions to the LGBTQ+ community in the fields of entertainment, politics, health, activism, academics, sports or other areas. ⁠

Kim Hunt, Vice President of Special Projects and Innovation at AIDS Foundation Chicago (AFC) and Executive Director of Pride Action Tank, and Markus Pitchford, President of Glenhouse Strategies and a former AFC board member, co-hosted the event. ⁠

As part of the Seven Days in June campaign, AFC's Senior Director of Policy & Advocacy Timothy S. Jackson spoke at the vigil held on the 45th anniversary of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Responding to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s question, "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?", Timothy answered:⁠

Community is what strengthened us in the earliest days of the epidemic when helping our loved ones die with dignity was our charge. Community is what steadied us through the stages of the early treatment options that were more like mirages in a vast desert. Community is what emboldened us to advocate for the Ryan White Care Act, HOPWA, new treatment and prevention modalities, and the repeal and modernization of stigmatizing laws that criminalize people living with HIV. And yes, community will guide us as we push back against laws, executive orders, and rhetoric intended to harm people impacted by HIV. ⁠

As the Pulse memorial is being built, LGBTQ+ civil rights across the country are being rolled back, especially for transgender and gender-diverse communities. As they build a memorial, we have also seen the arrests of protestors in Florida for recoloring the Pulse Memorial’s rainbow crosswalk; the removal of the pride flag from the Stonewall Monument in New York; the erasure of trans people and trans history in the LGBTQ+ movement on official government websites; and threats to our schools and hospitals for providing pro-LGBTQ+ education and gender affirming care.⁠

Reflecting on the 10-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub tragedy, we remember that we are not strangers to grief and loss; but we are also not strangers to joy and the belonging that comes from a legacy of LGBTQ+ changemakers and the visionaries who are co-creating inclusive, liberatory spaces today.⁠
