Sometimes the first splint isn’t always the best option!

Today I saw a patient who was just not wearing the splints like she wanted to. So we reassessed! I am most passionate about making sure the patients has the best support, the best fit! And sometimes that isn’t always right the first time!

I noticed that when she was wearing her Swan neck splint they were riding up to the joint and her poofy skin was causing the splint to feel tighter than intended. So we switched it up and use the split that gave more space on either side of the joint! And this was a great choice for this patient. I see this quite a bit in my hypermobility patients, that the joints are more prone to swelling.

So if you have questions about splints, drop a comment below out and let’s figure out what might be best for you!

We live in a family that experiences the symptoms associated with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder. Both my husband and I have been recognizing the correlation of our symptoms with connective tissue disorders and how that now is visibly present in our children.

As an OT, I have also been passionate about trying all the tools to support patients and now it’s also seeing what I can find to support my family.

Sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day can be demanding on the body and the mind. The Body Braid could be a tool to at supports you in prolonged sitting tasks. I know its worked for my PATIENTS, my family and myself!

Did you know that when you pull your wrist into extension or backwards, your fingers naturally pull in towards a fist and when you move your wrist forward or into flexion, your fingers naturally straighten.

This is something that naturally occurs in the body and it is called wrist tenodesis. What I have seen quite frequently in my practice is patients with hypermobility are often looking for feedback from a joint. This can come as putting pressure on joints in their end range and this is commonly seen in the wrist in a wrist flexion position.

This might not always result in an injury or pain, but when a joint is in a position for an extended period of time with added pressure, tendons can become lengthened or shortened. I often see patients with challenges, recruiting their flexor tendons because their extensor tendons are so over lengthened.

Instead of recommending strengthening exercises, we can work on the neurological balancing of the flexor and extensor muscle groups. We can begin to do this by using kinesiotape ( featuring my favorite, RockTape 🔥 Go Stronger, Longer ) to give feedback to the opposing muscle group to help with educating the body for rebalance.

I’ve been doing this with my patients lately and have had really great feedback for limiting and minimizing the time spent and pressured wrist flexion. Try it out and see if you notice any subtle changes in your upper extremities.

The Core Body Braid is one of my favorite products to recommend to my hypermobile and connective tissue patients. I am now very excited to share the leg extensions as another way to further support the lower body. The knees, ankles and feet are also areas where joint instability can be present in the body and cause potential symptoms or fatigue. The leg extensions have honestly been extremely comfortable and have been a game changer for several patients of mine. I cannot wait to continue to recommend them!

I made this video for my client but decided to share here in case others were looking for a short and sweet step by step to putting on the core braid with leg extensions!

Trigger finger can be a frustrating experience! The irritation and unpredictability can be exhausting for many individuals. While we can definitely consider surgical release of the sheath in which the tendon glides, surgery is not for every patient/person.

If you or your patients suffer from trigger finger but need other options for management, consider the Silver Ring Splint Company trigger splint.

It can provide the support needed to manage symptoms, minimize pain, and improve function. It can be combined with other conservative management treatments such as avoidance of repetitive gripping and vibration from tool usage.

When we have more information, we can make better decisions for our health!!

I’ve been getting some questions about thumb splints and wanted to do a quick breakdown on how to assess a thumb from a hand therapist perspective and ways to utilize Silver Ring Splint to support those challenges.

The thumb has three joints, the CMC joint, the MCP joint and the IP joint. It is important to assess each range of motion position at each of these joints to determine the best splint to provide the best level of support.

If you’re a hand hi therapist, occupational therapist or physical therapist, who is looking to learn more about how to provide preventative strategies and splinting for patients with thumb pain, let’s connect!

and if you’re a patient who is looking for more support in regards to figuring out why your hands are hurting, let’s connect!!

A pattern I see a lot in my hand therapy practice is ulnar sided hand pain from instability. This can present itself as hand pain, weakness, dropping objects and more.

Since the Ring and small finger are our gripping digit’s for holding onto objects tightly, when they are unstable it can lead to an array of challenges.

We can for proprioceptive input and creating a way to avoid positions of pain. Proprioception can be helpful in learning where our body is in space.

The EDS splint provides tactile cues to the dorsal and volar aspects of the hand to give that feedback.

The 2 1/2 buddy ring gives a boundary to the small finger while still allowing for abduction of the digits. It can also provide a little support for hyperextension.

If you’re working with a hand therapist and find yourself needing both of these options, there are ways to wear the splints together. This can provide even better feedback to the hand.

My favorite thing about being a hand therapist who works with hypermobility and sharing all the amazing tools we can utilize to receive the support we need.

I definitely struggle to remember to support my own hypermobile body. Even though I have been an OT for over 18 years, I still forget that I have tools to help my own body feel supported. A tool that I keep coming back to consistently is the Body Braid core braid. It’s hard to describe what it does for me but in simple words it helps me feel stable. I have this in my office so all the patients who come through my office get a chance to experience how it feels! And let me tell you, it’s ALWAYS a hit.

If you’re looking to try this out, use my discount code Miller5 for a little discount!
