Here are 5 ways to optimize your results before elective surgery:
1.) Go to your pre-admission testing visit and follow their instructions!
—> They’ll review your medical history and go over medications in depth—the timing of what should be continued, adjusted, or held before surgery. Medications can directly affect your body’s physiology, hemodynamics and response to anesthesia.
2.). Make Exercise a Habit!
—> Improving your physical fitness before surgery can help prepare your body for the stress of anesthesia and recovery. Simply put, improving your fitness and strength improves the capacity of your heart and lungs under anesthesia—and can support a smoother, quicker recovery.
3.) Quit smoking, va**ng, heavy alcohol use, and any drug use (including ma*****na).
—> These substances can change your anesthetic requirement and raise the risk of respiratory complications, poor wound healing, cardiovascular instability, and give you more challenges during recovery. I can’t say this loudly enough—we are the folks you want to be honest with! Your anesthesia team will keep you safest when we have accurate information.
