Osteoporosis can develop quietly, without obvious symptoms. Women age 65 and older are generally advised to speak with their healthcare provider about bone-density screening. Earlier screening may also be appropriate for some postmenopausal women with additional risk factors.

A bone-density test can help identify weakening bones early, when you and your healthcare provider can take steps to help prevent fractures.
