3 Reasons Your Child Shouldn’t Sit in the “W” Position

That little W-sit may look comfortable, but when it becomes a child’s preferred sitting position, it can be a clue that we need to look a little deeper.

1. It reduces core activation
W-sitting creates a very wide, stable base. That means your child doesn’t have to use their trunk and core muscles as much to stay upright. Over time, relying on this position may limit opportunities to build the postural strength and balance needed for healthy movement.

2. It can limit trunk rotation & crossing midline
When the hips and legs are locked into a W, it’s harder to rotate through the trunk and reach across the body. Crossing midline is an important developmental skill involved in coordination, bilateral integration, handwriting, sports and other motor tasks.

3. It places the hips and legs in an extreme position
W-sitting puts the hips into significant internal rotation and can increase rotational stress through the hips, knees and ankles. I’m especially interested when a child always chooses W-sitting or struggles to comfortably sit another way.

🌊 What I want parents to know:
Seeing your child W-sit occasionally doesn’t mean something is wrong. Instead of constantly saying, “Don’t sit like that,” ask WHY their body prefers that position.

I look at the whole child: their core stability, hips, pelvis, spine, balance, coordination and neurological development.

Try encouraging:
• Criss-cross sitting
• Side sitting on either side
• Long sitting with the legs in front
• Kneeling or half-kneeling

Sometimes the way a child sits is giving us valuable information about how their nervous system and body are developing.

Make sure they get evaluated to check to see what is going on structurally. It will affect their growth.

A lot of of people been asking about Max and how he’s doing. He’s doing OK. I finally see a little bit of a difference in the last couple days. He’s got that sparkle in his eye again which makes my heart happy.

He will probably never go on the long walks like we used to. He had major knee surgery almost 6 years ago. He’s over 100 pounds and he’s a big boy so we do the best we can.

Max is from Iran. I rescued him and his sister almost 11 years ago. I rescued them after my sweet Carly died. A patient of mine sent me a picture of them and I knew I had to have them. I felt like Carly had sent them to me. I love them with all my heart

So Max, Lando and I went across the street at a park. Sitting in the shade so he can get outside fresh air some new smells and I think he likes it.

Get outside and enjoy the day. It’s beautiful, but make sure you stay hydrated.

Does Your Baby Always Look to the Same Side? 👶🏼

I want parents to know that this is something worth paying attention to.

Torticollis is when a baby has tightness or limited movement in the neck that causes them to favor turning or tilting their head to one side.

Sometimes parents first notice it because:

🤍 Baby always sleeps looking in the same direction
🤍 One side is much easier during breastfeeding
🤍 Baby becomes upset when you turn their head the other way
🤍 Their head consistently tilts to one side
🤍 Tummy time seems unusually difficult
🤍 A flat spot begins developing on one side of the head

Birth positioning and the physical forces surrounding delivery can contribute to musculoskeletal asymmetry, but torticollis can have different causes, which is why early evaluation is important.

Why do I care so much about this?

A baby’s ability to comfortably turn their head both directions gives them important visual, vestibular and proprioceptive input as their brain develops. Symmetrical movement also becomes important as they progress toward tummy time, rolling, sitting and crawling.

In my office, I look at the whole baby: neck mobility, cranial and jaw tension, spinal and pelvic movement, feeding mechanics, primitive reflexes and overall neurological development.

My approach with babies is extremely gentle and incorporates pediatric chiropractic and craniosacral techniques. When appropriate, I also love collaborating with pediatric physical therapists and lactation professionals.

Don’t just wait for them to “grow out of it.” Early recognition gives us more options and allows us to support healthy, symmetrical movement during an incredibly important period of brain development.

If your baby has a favorite side, let’s take a look. 💙

All they need is for you to be present. Our first instinct when our kiddos are melting down or having a tantrum is what’s wrong.

What we need to do is get down to their eye level look them in the eye and touch them. A gentle touch on the forearm or on the shoulder, preferably skin to skin. Ask them how they’re feeling ask him how you can help.

Touch is so powerful it releases oxytocin for both of you. It will calm cortisol levels, which is what we need when order a flight or flight state.

If you go forehead to forehead, that can also help decrease that vagal tone from that sympathetic dominant to that parasympathetic rest and digest. Slow down be present that’s all they need.

Pregnancy changes EVERYTHING. 🤍

As your baby grows, your center of gravity changes, your pelvis adapts, ligaments become more flexible and your nervous system is constantly responding to the demands of pregnancy.

This is one of the reasons I love caring for pregnant moms.

I am certified in the Webster Technique, a specific chiropractic approach designed for pregnancy that focuses on assessing the pelvis and addressing joint dysfunction while also considering the surrounding muscles and ligaments.

The goal is not to “turn” the baby. That is an important distinction.

The goal of Webster care is to help improve pelvic function and balance and reduce musculoskeletal stress so Mom’s body can adapt as comfortably as possible throughout pregnancy.

Gentle chiropractic care during pregnancy may also help with common musculoskeletal complaints such as:

🤍 Low back discomfort
🤍 Pelvic and SI joint discomfort
🤍 Hip pain
🤍 Postural changes
🤍 General aches as your body makes room for baby

And I always look beyond just the spine. My approach incorporates my background in craniosacral work and integrative neurology, because pregnancy involves the whole nervous system, not simply the pelvis.

After more than three decades of caring for pregnant women and babies, this remains one of my absolute favorite parts of what I do.

Pregnancy is incredible. Your body is doing extraordinary work.

Sometimes Mom needs a little support too. 💕

I am very, very, very blessed in my life that I have an amazing relationship with my children. I thank God every day and I never take it for granted.

As parents and I think especially me being a single mom would you know that they’re OK and they’re on a good pass for their life you just can’t beat it. It’s a sense of peace. That is unbelievable.

So parents enjoy your kids it goes by in an instant and their adults. #

Why I Love Checking Babies After a C-Section 🤍

A C-section can be absolutely necessary and lifesaving. But a baby born by C-section has a different transition into the world than a baby who moves through labor and the vaginal canal.

Two things I think are especially important:

1. They may experience less of the sensory input that comes with labor and vaginal birth.
During labor, contractions and movement through the birth canal provide enormous amounts of pressure, touch, movement and proprioceptive sensory input to a baby’s developing nervous system. With a planned C-section before labor, much of that experience is bypassed.

2. Their first exposure to microbes is different.
During vaginal birth, babies are exposed to maternal vaginal and intestinal microorganisms that contribute to the early development of their microbiome. Babies born by C-section tend to have a different pattern of early gut colonization. We are still learning how these early differences influence immune and metabolic development over time.

And remember, a C-section isn’t necessarily a “stress-free” birth for baby’s body. Positioning in utero, uterine contractions if labor occurred, and the delivery itself can all contribute to tension.

This is why I love evaluating these little ones after birth. With an incredibly gentle chiropractic and craniosacral assessment, I look at head and neck movement, cranial tension, jaw function, feeding mechanics, body symmetry and how comfortably baby is moving and settling.

C-section moms need extra support too. Your body just went through pregnancy, birth AND major abdominal surgery. ❤️

No guilt. No judgment about how your baby entered the world. Just information, choices and support for both mom and baby.

Be Well. Be Kind.

🥑 IS IT REALLY AVOCADO OIL?

This one surprised me.

A new 2026 study from researchers at UC Davis, published in Applied Food Research, tested processed foods that listed avocado oil as their oil ingredient.

Researchers extracted the oils from the foods and analyzed their fatty-acid and sterol profiles to see whether they matched authentic avocado oil.

The results:

🥑 54 avocado-oil products tested
❌ 48 of 54 (89%) had oil profiles inconsistent with authentic avocado oil
❌ 26 of 28 chips (93%)
❌ 10 of 14 mayonnaises (71%)
❌ 12 of 12 salad dressings (100%)

The researchers found evidence suggesting the presence of other, less expensive oils in many of these products, even though avocado oil was the oil listed on the label. (UC Davis)

Brands represented among the products tested included:

Bella Sun Luci
BetterBody Foods
Bettergoods
Boulder Canyon
Bragg
Briannas
California Olive Ranch
Chosen Foods
Good Health
Graza
Grove AvoYeah!
Jackson’s
Kettle Brand
Lay’s
LesserEvil
Primal Kitchen
Sensible Portions
Siete
Simply Frito-Lay
Sir Kensington’s
Sprouts Farmers Market
Torres
Trader Joe’s

⚠️ Important: This does NOT mean every product from every brand on this list failed. These are brands represented in the study, and the findings apply to the specific products and lots researchers tested.

Why does this matter?

Many of us intentionally pay more for products made with avocado oil because we are trying to make a different choice for ourselves and our families.

We should be able to trust what is written on a food label.

This isn’t about creating fear around food. It’s about transparency, informed choices and knowing what you’re actually paying for.

Read your labels. Ask questions. Stay curious. 🥑

Your child isn’t lazy. Their brain may be working harder than you realize.”

“Does your child sit down to do homework and 20 minutes later they’re staring out the window, frustrated, or telling you they just can’t do it?

Sometimes we assume they’re distracted, unmotivated, or simply not trying hard enough.

But attention is much more complicated than that.

When I work with kids who are struggling with focus, ADHD, anxiety, sleep, or learning, I want to understand how they’re functioning, not just the label they’ve been given.

That’s one of the reasons I use neurofeedback.

We can measure patterns of brainwave activity and use that information to create individualized neurofeedback training.

And here’s what I really want parents to know:

Your child is not their diagnosis.

Sometimes the child who’s being told to ‘try harder’ is already trying incredibly hard.

If you’d like to understand neurofeedback, I’m starting a FREE weekly Neurofeedback 101 webinar where I’ll explain brainwaves, brain mapping, how neurofeedback works, what a session looks like, and answer your questions.

Call Ocean Wellness at 858-792-7296 for details.”

They may be working harder than you realize.

Happy Breastfeeding Week 🤍

Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn’t mean it is always easy.

After more than three decades of caring for moms and babies, I’ve seen how much goes into this relationship. Birth itself can place stress on a newborn’s tiny body, particularly the neck, jaw and cranial structures. Sometimes that tension can make getting a comfortable, effective latch more challenging.

That’s one reason I love checking babies early.

Through very gentle chiropractic and craniosacral care, we can assess the baby’s movement, jaw and neck tension, head preference and overall nervous system function. I also love working alongside lactation professionals when additional breastfeeding support is needed.

And moms need care too. Pregnancy, labor, delivery, feeding positions, sleepless nights and constantly holding a newborn are a LOT on your body.

Most importantly, there is no one “perfect” breastfeeding journey. Some moms breastfeed exclusively. Some pump. Some supplement. Some use formula. A healthy, supported mom and a nourished baby are what matter.

To every new mom: give yourself grace. You and your baby are learning each other. 💕

If breastfeeding has been difficult, or you simply want your newborn checked after birth, give us a call.
