Did moving your kid into college remind you that your back isn't as young as it used to be?

If lifting boxes, carrying furniture, or climbing dorm room stairs left you with lingering back or joint pain, it might be time to get it checked out.

Regenexx Des Moines is now offering regenerative spine procedures, and Dr. Bergum is already seeing encouraging results from patients treated this summer.

One recent patient reported a 75% improvement in low back pain just four weeks after treatment. That is faster than typically expected, and every patient's response and recovery timeline can be different.

The important thing is knowing that chronic back pain does not always mean you have to simply live with it or jump straight to surgery.

If move-in weekend did a number on your back, come see what may be causing it and learn what options are available.

“Are you a chiropractor?”

Dr. Bergum gets this question a lot.

The answer is no. He is a licensed physician and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine with extensive training in sports medicine and interventional orthobiologics.

His path started as an electrical engineer before attending the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, completing his family medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and completing sports medicine fellowship training at The Ohio State University.

Since then, he has completed extensive additional training in interventional orthobiologics, using technologies like high resolution ultrasound, X-ray, and fluoroscopy to precisely guide treatments into joints and surrounding tissues.

When someone is treating your joints, tendons, ligaments, or spine, experience, training, and precision matter.

Back pain does not automatically mean back surgery.

There are nonsurgical options designed to treat the joints and tissues that may be contributing to your pain.

At Regenexx Des Moines, regenerative spine procedures can use your own platelet rich plasma to treat arthritic joints in the spine or platelet lysate around irritated nerves associated with conditions like sciatica.

These minimally invasive procedures are performed in the office using precise image guidance.

No operating room. No hospital stay. No surgical recovery.

Patients can get up, walk off the table, and begin their recovery immediately.

If back pain has you thinking surgery is your only option, it may be time to learn what else is available.

Would you remove all your teeth because you had one cavity?

Probably not.

So why should replacing an entire joint be the first answer when you develop arthritis?

Think about how we treat our teeth. When there's a cavity, the goal is to repair the damage and preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible. An implant is saved for when the tooth truly cannot be saved.

Dr. Bergum believes we should think about our joints the same way.

At Regenexx Des Moines, the goal is to preserve your natural joint and use advanced, nonsurgical regenerative treatments to support your body's own healing process whenever appropriate.

Joint replacement can be an important option when it is truly necessary. But before replacing your knee, hip, or shoulder, shouldn't you find out if you can keep it?

Keep your parts. Make replacement the last resort.

Think Regenexx is just for knees, hips, and shoulders?

Think again.

Regenerative treatments may also be an option for arthritis in smaller joints, including the hands, wrists, fingers, and feet.

For patients dealing with arthritis in multiple finger joints, platelet rich plasma can be used to treat several joints during the same treatment session.

So if stiff, painful hands are making everyday activities more difficult, you may have options you have not considered yet.

Joint pain can affect almost any part of your body. Your treatment options should not stop at the big joints.

“Easy peasy.”

Three months ago, reaching up to a high shelf was something this patient wanted to be able to do again.

Now, he’s doing it with a 5-pound weight.

His occupational therapist told him she was surprised by how quickly he was progressing and was ready to release him from therapy weeks ahead of schedule.

On Monday, he graduates from occupational therapy.

Recovery is about more than reducing pain. It is about getting your strength, movement, and independence back so everyday activities feel easy again.

Three months later, that goal is becoming reality.
