Today we pause to remember and honor Susan Teas.

Susan was a former Arc of Iowa board member, a dedicated volunteer, and a trusted friend whose wisdom and kindness made a lasting difference to our organization. Whenever I needed advice, perspective, or someone willing to step in and help, Susan was always there.

There was a time in The Arc of Iowa’s history when we were seriously considering closing our doors. Susan believed deeply that the mission was too important to let that happen. She encouraged us to keep moving forward, reminding us that the people and families we served were counting on us. Her belief in our mission helped shape the path that brought us to where we are today.

Because of people like Susan, The Arc of Iowa continues to advocate, serve, and create opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across our state.

On behalf of The Arc of Iowa, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Susan’s family and friends. We are grateful for her service, her compassion, and the legacy she leaves behind. Thank you, Susan, for believing in The Arc of Iowa when it mattered most. You will be deeply missed.

Please keep Susan’s family in your thoughts as they celebrate a life dedicated to making a difference.

Hear Us Roar was featured on the news, but the story is about so much more than one event.

Disability Pride is about recognizing that people with disabilities belong in every part of our communities—not because of charity or sympathy, but because every person has inherent value, unique gifts, and a voice that deserves to be heard.

For generations, people with disabilities were too often hidden away or told to lower their expectations. Disability Pride challenges that history. It celebrates identity, promotes inclusion, and reminds all of us that accessibility and belonging make our communities stronger.

More than 1,000 Iowans came together at Blank Park Zoo to celebrate exactly that. Families, self-advocates, community organizations, volunteers, elected officials, and neighbors shared a day of joy, connection, and possibility. It was a reminder of what Iowa looks like when everyone is welcomed and everyone belongs.

Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, sponsored, and helped make Hear Us Roar such an incredible celebration. The movement doesn’t end with one day—it continues every time we choose inclusion, remove barriers, and see the strengths in one another.

Together, we’ll keep making Iowa a place where every voice is valued and every person belongs.
