BRCA1 and BRCA2 get called “the breast cancer gene,” and that nickname does a lot of damage. It makes people assume it’s only a women’s issue and only about one cancer. Neither is true. A BRCA change can raise the risk of ovarian, prostate, melanoma, and pancreatic cancer too, and it’s inherited equally from either parent. That’s why your whole family’s history matters.

Knowing you carry it helps you go from reacting to getting ahead. It opens the door to earlier, more frequent screening and real options to lower risk.

Loeys-Dietz is a connective tissue condition that's easy to overlook because its clues seem unrelated: twisty arteries, widely spaced eyes, flexible joints, a curved spine, even a split in the uvula. On their own, easy to miss. Together, they tell a story.
The empowering part? When it's identified, there's a clear, proactive plan and knowing which gene is involved helps shape exactly what that plan looks like. That's the difference between reacting and being proactive.
Helping families sort out their symptoms, family history, and genetic testing is exactly what I do every day!
If connective tissue runs in yours, save this and send it to the person who came to mind.

Every July session at Empower Genetics told a different story
Cancer risk. Connective tissue concerns. Making sense of past results. Chasing down answers for symptoms no one could explain.
Whatever brought you here, you don't have to figure it out alone.

Genetic testing is more accessible and more affordable than it’s ever been. The catch is that almost nobody is being told they qualify. If there’s a pattern of cancer, heart conditions, or a known family variant, you may be a good candidate, and you don’t need a physician referral to find out. That’s a conversation you can have with me directly.

Before people book with us, they usually have a few of the same questions. So we put the most common ones in one place.

A quick rundown of what we get asked most: whether you need a referral (you don’t), how payment and superbills work, whether you have to do genetic testing (you don’t), and what we can actually help with, from hereditary cancer risk to your 23andMe results.

Swipe through for the short answers. If yours isn’t here, send us a message or book a discovery call and we’ll talk it through.

Most of my patients apologize before they tell me their symptoms.
They shouldn't have to. But by the time someone gets to me, they've usually been through a few rounds of being told it's stress, or anxiety, or that everything looked normal so there's nothing more to do.
So let me say it plainly: I believe you.
I believe the symptom you've had since you were nine. I believe the family pattern you noticed before anyone else did. I believe you when you say something is different in your body, even if nothing has come back abnormal yet.
So I built a genetic counseling prescribe that give you plenty of time to talk about what you want to talk about and I take bookings directly. No referral. No criteria to qualify for. Just come tell me your story, and I'll take it seriously.

Someone you love just got a diagnosis you've never heard of. You type something, delete it, and type it again.

Here's some ideas of what can be helpful (and not so helpful) to someone navigating a new diagnoses.

I need your help Idaho!

I have been having several patients with connective tissue disorders come to me asking "Can you help me find a primary care provider/PT/cardiologist/etc that knows how to treat these symptoms and will actually listen to me?"

These patients aren't asking for miracles. They're asking for a provider who:

-Understands the complexity of connective tissue disorders

-Won't dismiss their symptoms as anxiety or hypochondria

-Is willing to collaborate on a care plan.

If you are, or know, a physician, PT, OT, cardiologist, rheumatologist, or any specialist in Idaho who has experience and compassion for this patient population, I'd love to hear from you! I'm creating a directory to share with my patients so that they can receive the quality care they have been searching for.

Please comment below or send me a message if you know anyone or a practice. Thank you in advance!

Most people aren’t ignoring their health, they’re just missing key pieces of the puzzle.

If you’ve ever been told everything is “normal” but it doesn’t feel that way, genetics can help explain why and connect the dots.

It adds context to your symptoms, your family history, and even how your body responds to medications.

If you’re curious what that could look like for you, I offer discovery calls to explore whether genetic counseling makes sense.
