5 Tips on How to Optimize your Post-Operative Recovery

1. Follow weight bearing instructions!!
- Surgeon puts these in place for a reason! It’s important to allow for the tissues to heal appropriately and increased stress from body weight can severely affect how a tendon/ligament repairs or how a bone heals. Remember it is only temporary!

2. Stay ahead of your pain
- It’s hard to move/participate in PT/sleep if your pain is out of control. Be sure to follow your MD medication instructions. Use ice/compression as needed and/or instructed.

3. MOVE!!
- Rest after surgery sounds nice, but too much can actually hinder your recovery. A body heals better when there is good blood flow. Gentle movement - even in the non-affected areas if immobilized, within tolerance and allowed by protocol, is helpful to ensure a smooth recovery. Movement will assit with decreasing joint stiffness, improving swelling/edema, and preventing scar tissue adhesions.

4. Attend PT regularly
- Prime PT therapists are expertly trained in movement and knowledge of healing time frames that will guide your recovery. Your therapist will ensure proper incision/scar care, appropriate range of motion, edema/swelling managment and strengthening when appropriate to get you back to what you love.

5. Be kind to your physiology
- Healing takes time. Surgery is a big deal. Do not rush your body to heal by trying to do more than the tissues can handle.
Remeber: surgical incisions -2-4 weeks
tendon repair - 6-12 weeks
bone helaing - 6-8+ weeks depending on location and bone health
ligament repair - 3 -12 months
