Congratulations to our founders Jack Wall and Kamala Bauers on receiving the Renee Brown Award. Their vision helped shape Sponsored Residential services in Virginia and continues to impact lives every day.❤️

This year’s recipient of the Renee Brown Award goes to Jack Wall and Kamala Bauers. As you know, the Renee Brown award is given each year to someone who supports our vision: People with disabilities living full, rich lives as active, contributing members of their communities. Their work has made it possible for people with disabilities to do just that.

Back in the early nineties, when the waiver was born, Jack worked with a colleague who was developing the notion of family-based living as a community-based alternative to group homes. He and Kamala studied the model first hand by moving 3 people from group homes into their home where they worked to provide the support each person needed to articipate in community resources and events that each of them preferred. This was the birth of the person-centered sponsored residential model for community-based living in Virginia.

Over the years, Wall Residences has expanded the model statewide enabling thousands of people to live safely in the community “as active, contributing members of their communities” just like Renee Brown would have wanted.

Throughout October, we recognize Down Syndrome Awareness Month and shine a light on those who happen to have been born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. This month is an opportunity to raise awareness of the many abilities of people with Down syndrome, break down barriers to employment and other opportunities, and promote full inclusion in education and the community.
