One thing we love about our in-home sessions is walking up and seeing that play has been happening here.

A few dump trucks, dinosaurs, and shovels can hold a lot of play: digging, building, pretending, planning, and starting over.

Play is at the heart of what we do at Kith&Kin. That often means following a child’s idea long enough to help them ask for what they need, bring someone else into the game, or try a small change without losing the fun.

One of our supervising clinicians shared a fun idea: each month, we’ll add one unexpected item to our therapy team’s play bins and see where their creativity takes it.

Going into the September bins: pool noodles!

So far, they’ve become:
• A prop for follow the leader
• Donuts for a tea party
• A fishing pole for water play (just add string & hook from clothing hanger!)
• A tower to stack and crash

That’s one of the things we love about in-home therapy. With a little creativity, even the simplest items found around the house can create new opportunities for play, connection, communication, and movement.

We’re excited to see what else our team comes up with!

Is my child old enough for VPK or kindergarten… or are they ready?

Those might sound like the same question.

But this fall, we’ve helped families at Kith&Kin ABA navigate both, and we wanted to share an important reminder:

They’re not quite the same thing.

Children don’t all grow at the same pace. And that’s okay. In fact, it’s part of what makes them wonderfully, uniquely themselves.

For some children diagnosed with autism, another year can offer valuable time to continue building communication, regulation, flexibility, independence, and social-emotional skills.

For others, they’re ready now! Ready to take that next step, meet new friends, and discover what the next chapter has in store.

So how do you know?

There isn’t one right answer for every child. But there can be an intentional answer for each child and family.

And that’s what we’re after.

The goal isn’t simply to start school when the calendar says it’s time. It’s to help each child step into their next chapter with the skills, confidence, and support they need to thrive.

We’re not pro-delay or pro-starting-early. We’re pro-understanding your child.

Because sometimes the best next step is to wait, and sometimes it’s to go. What matters is understanding what your child needs and giving them the support, confidence, and encouragement to get there.

When children feel safe, connected, and engaged, they're more likely to explore, communicate, solve problems, and practice new skills.

That doesn't mean every moment has to be "teachable." Sometimes the most meaningful learning happens while building a fort, pretending to be dinosaurs, chasing bubbles, or sharing a laugh together.

Parent Tip: Spend 10–15 minutes each day following your child's lead in play. Put away distractions, let them choose the activity, and simply join in. By entering their world, you're strengthening your relationship and creating the perfect environment for learning to grow naturally.
