Mary Washington Healthcare

Mary Washington Healthcare Mary Washington Healthcare began in 1899 as an eight-room hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Our mission to our community is clear.

Mary Washington Healthcare is a non-profit regional health system with two hospitals, four emergency departments, and over 80 healthcare facilities and wellness services. Today, it has evolved into a non-profit regional system of two hospitals (571 beds), three emergency departments, and over 50 healthcare facilities and wellness services. Our Board of Trustees is made up of community leaders who

serve in a volunteer capacity to guide our direction. Mary Washington Healthcare exists to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve. As a non-profit corporation, we invest our profits back into the organization through such activities as upgrading our technology, developing new services and hiring new staff. The result is continuous improvement in the scope and quality of care we’re able to provide to the community.

We had a great time at the Fredericksburg Nationals game this past Saturday! A big thank you to our volunteers who shared info about the programs and services offered by the Regional Cancer Center, as well as the Jared Box Project at Mary Washington Healthcare, which gathers busy boxes for children in our ERs and hospitals. Dr. Rod Flynn and Dr. Meredith Whittaker were highlighted on the big screen and during the mid-game interview, while breast cancer survivor Brett Heins had the honor of throwing the first pitch, with her son serving as the mini manager!

πŸ₯ˆπŸ Our teammate brought home silver!

Everyone at Stafford Hospital knows James Wenley for his hard work, friendly smile, and positive energy. For 18 years, he's been an important part of our Environmental Services team, helping keep our hospital ready to care for patients every day.

This summer, James represented Virginia at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota, where he and his volleyball team earned a silver medal! πŸŽ‰πŸπŸ₯ˆ

James says winning silver was "real amazing," but what he enjoyed most was meeting athletes from all 50 states and being part of a national event that brought people together through sports.

Whether he's competing on the volleyball court or helping his coworkers before sunrise at Stafford Hospital, James embodies teamwork, dedication, and kindness.

Please join us in congratulating James on this incredible achievement and wishing him luck as he prepares for his next Special Olympics competitions! πŸ‘

From student-athlete to future surgeon, Sabrina Elliott's journey has brought her back to Fredericksburg.

A University of Mary Washington alumna and former lacrosse captain, Sabrina chose Mary Washington Healthcare's general surgery residency program for the opportunity to help build something new, gain early hands-on experience and learn alongside engaged faculty mentors.

Now, she's helping care for the community she already calls home.

"When you have a special connection to the community, patients are more like family," Sabrina said.

Answer: D. All of the above!
Neurology is about much more than just the brain. The brain, spine and nerves work together to control everything from movement and sensation to memory and mood.

They came for residency and stayed for the experience.

We are proud to celebrate two graduates of the Mary Washington Healthcare Pharmacy Residency Program who chose to continue their careers at MWHC. Their decision to stay highlights the exceptional training, mentorship, and sense of community that help our residents thrive long after graduation.

For Ashley, now working in our inpatient pharmacy, it was the people who made the biggest impact.

"The people and relationships I built throughout my residency were definitely the most memorable part," she said. "I really enjoyed the culture, the people, and the opportunities that were given to me during my residency. I knew this was a place I would like to continue to grow professionally."

MaKayla, who is now working at Medical Arts Pharmacy, found value in the variety of experiences and opportunities for growth.

"The opportunities the organization provided to grow as a pharmacist and gain experience in different areas of practice made me want to stay," she said. "I also appreciated being familiar with the organization and seeing potential for continued professional growth beyond residency."

Both encourage future residents to embrace every opportunity. Ashley's advice: "Keep an open mind and take advantage of all the opportunities that are given to you." MaKayla offers reassurance to incoming residents: "You belong here. Don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for more feedback. This year is about learning, growing and becoming more confident in yourself as a pharmacist."

We're grateful that talented pharmacists like Ashley and MaKayla choose to continue their careers at MWHC and help shape the future of pharmacy care in our community.
