I’ve had quite a few reach out to me lately about a referral. If you’d like your child to receive therapy please have your neurologist (or P*P) fax a referral to VCH psych department. I have quite a waiting list and we triage tics/Tourettes and epilepsy patients so please don’t hesitate to have a referral sent in. I cannot take appointment requests here anymore.

“Mom, what’s wrong with Salmon?”

When my five-year-old son asked me that question, I already knew our beloved betta fish had died.

For many children, losing a pet is their first experience with death and their grief can be much bigger and more complicated than adults realize.

My new article for Valley Children's Hospital shares practical ways parents and caregivers can help children navigate the loss of a beloved pet, including:

🐾 Using honest, age-appropriate language
🐾 Making space for every emotion
🐾 Answering difficult questions simply
🐾 Creating meaningful ways to remember
🐾 Recognizing when a child may need more support

Children do not need us to fix their grief. They need us to sit with them in it.

We all want to protect children from every painful emotion. However, we really should aim to help them learn that grief can be survived, shared and carried with love.

Please save or share this with a parent, teacher, pediatric professional or pet-loving family who may need it. 🤍

So many people avoid getting support for their child because of what they think therapy requires: digging everything up, falling apart, or being told that what’s wrong with only a few ineffective tools to help. That’s not how this works. Support can be paced, collaborative, grounding, and not overwhelming.

*Cue Mariah Carey’s “It’s tiiiiiimmmeee” (for everyone to get sick). Everyone is sick at home and so are you except you don’t get to call out of parenthood. What do you do when everyone is low energy yet somehow bored? Maybe you need a break, too? Try some of these low-key activities that won’t drive you bananas.

These are screen free ideas but if there ever was a time to bust out a screen it’s now. Screens are tools if you’d need them to be. No shame here!

What are some of your sick day ideas? Post them below so we can help each other out during this diabolical time!
