Free Range Food Co-op

Free Range Food Co-op Our start-up Food Co-op THRIVES on the support of our owners and volunteers. Visit our office in Room 209, Old Central School. Join as an owner today!

The Free Range Food Co-op steering committee was formed in October of 2015 to gauge the interest and feasibility of starting a food cooperative in the Itasca County area. After a few months of new members joining the committee, and an overwhelmingly positive community response, the decision was made to move forward. The official definition of a cooperative is: an autonomous association of persons

united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise. For our purposes, this means we want a member-owned, member-run, food co-op that specializes in fresh local produce, sustainably raised meats, and organic and natural products in OUR community! Our promise to you is that we will work tirelessly to make this happen, by conducting community outreach to gain support and memberships, establishing relationships with farmers and growers to secure fresh, local produce when our store opens, fundraising events, and taking advantage of every possible resource in order to be successful. But, ultimately this can't happen without the support of the community. We need YOU to let us know you want this. You can do that by taking the community survey, reaching out to us to let us know you support the co-op, serving on a planning committee, and of course joining the food co-op by purchasing your member equity share of $100. This is a one-time payment only. There are no annual fees, and no volunteer requirements to work in the co-op. Contact us at: [email protected]

Say 'Hello' to our little friend... Frankie the Free Range Food Co-op chicken!

Thanks to TWO generous Owner Families that stepped up to MATCH each other,
OUR FINAL $50K Match Starts TODAY and runs till the end of our Campaign, Tuesday, JUNE 30. Watch the video for a personal message from CIC Team Lead, Becky LaPlant!

Becky has been an integral life force for the Community Investment Campaign team and the entire Board. Taking on this much of a leadership position was not what she expected when she joined the team three years ago, but has blossomed into the role beautifully. She has inspired not only us on the FRFC team but many in the community to fund our future store with what they are able to contribute.

Our fearless leader in the face of many challenges, she has kept us all calm, cool, and collected - while moving forward each and every day.

Feeling it was important to issue this FINAL match challenge, Becky and husband Rick McDonald put up $25,000 of their own money to bring the campaign home and close the gap. When she spoke about their contribution with fellow co-op owner, John McMahon, John and the McMahon family did not hesitate to match their match - bringing us to $50K to match an earlier challenge issued by Tiffany Gesme, who put up $50K of her own and extended the invitation to others in the community.

In the video Becky states, "This is what exemplifies the co-op in a nutshell, one person steps up and another person steps up right beside them" and we couldn't agree more! Cooperation is in our name for a reason, we so much stronger together than we are individually - the campaign stats show that.

We are so grateful for all the contributions that have gotten us this far, to $1.17M or 78% of our goal!

We have never been closer to reaching $1.5M so... LETS FINISH THIS BEFORE JUNE 30! Visit www.FreeRangeFood.coop/invest or give us a call at 218-326-6667 (leave a message!) to find out all the ways you can make a contribution! ❤🐓

Yesterday morning Shara, Lydia, Ellen and Tom dodged the rain and hit the ditches of our Adopt-A-Highway on Trout Lake Road! In a little more than an hour they picked up at least 5 feed bags worth of garbage. We'll have to plan for a little earlier next year as the roadsides have already gotten a little overgrown and thankfully not ~too~ many ticks were found afterwards. ❤️🐓

We had so much FUN and the Master Gardener's Sensory Garden Planting Workshop!

30 participants filled our room and were supplied with all the components needed to create beautiful planters to tantalize all the senses. Master Gardeners Lexa Mack and Bev Roscos (also a dedicated FRFC volunteer) led the way and offered support for choosing what types of plants would complement each other. From taste to touch, each seed was planted with intention! 🌱

We can't wait to do more events like this in the future! ❤️🐓

Earlier this year, Free Range Food Co-op owner Tiffany Gesme put $50,000 on the table and issued a challenge to her fellow owners and the broader community: step up during the co-op’s final campaign push. The response has been remarkable.
Gesme’s challenge has generated $150,000 in response — $75,000 in outright gifts and another $75,000 that three community families are putting to work as match challenges to help the co-op reach its community fundraising goal.
Woodland Bank CEO Brian Nicklason was among the first to answer, committing $25,000 in the name of Woodland Bank and the Nicklason Family. Nicklason also expressed his hope that other banks in the area will follow their lead.
“Woodland Bank has been part of this community for a long time, and when I saw what Free Range Food Co-op was building - community ownership, local investment, keeping dollars circulating right here in Itasca County - I knew we needed to be part of it,” said Nicklason. “A grocery store is infrastructure. It’s not a nice-to-have; it’s a cornerstone of a healthy community. I’m proud to support this project, and I’d encourage every bank in the area to take a hard look at what they can do to help get this store open.”

Gesme says Nicklason’s response has only reinforced her confidence in the project and the community behind it.
“Seeing firsthand the hard work, dedication, and incredible generosity my fellow owners and this community are pouring into this project inspired me to step up. I believe in it - and clearly, so does Woodland Bank,” said Gesme. “I’m thrilled by Brian and the Nicklason family’s generosity, and I hope it inspires others to follow their lead.”
