SSI benefits for many people with disabilities will surpass $1,000 per month for the first time next year making it even harder for beneficiaries to save without exceeding the program's asset limits.

At EOCIL, we wanted to take a moment to mourn the passing of one of the Pioneers of the Independent Living Movement, Eugene "Gene" Organ who passed away on Oct 10, 2026. As a person with physical, visual and hearing disabilities Gene was central to the passage of the ADA. Here are just a few of his accomplishments

-In 1991, he was appointed as Oregon's ADA advisor.
-From 1988-2000 Gene was the Executive Director of the Oregon Disabilities Commission
-in 2000, Gene received the Oregon Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Oregon IL Community is so grateful to Gene for his efforts. Without him, we don't know where we'd be. We are so thankful.

Rest in Power, Gene Organ.

Disability History: The ADA Amendments Act of 2008 is passed, September 25, 2008. ⚖️

In 1999, a series of Supreme Court cases known as the “Sutton Trilogy” significantly narrowed the definition of disability under the ADA, essentially establishing that people who use medication or devices to manage their disability were not “disabled enough” to benefit from the protections of the ADA.

To remedy this, the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 formally rejected these rulings and restored broad coverage. The act was influenced by advocacy from groups as influential as AAPD, the Epilepsy Foundation, and the National Council on Independent Living.

Because of this act’s passage, EVERY person with a disability can remain protected by the provisions in the ADA, as was intended by its writers and advocates.
