bout 100 years ago, I told Angie that when I retire I want a room in the house so that if someone was in pain, I could help them. At the time, I was managing the Spine Physical Therapy department for a large orthopedic practice. I came home from work one particularly stressful day, and Angie asked me why I was going to wait to do things the way I wanted to. I couldn't answer that question. Angie decided to leave teaching to allow me to have my dream job. In 2009 we dedicated 3 rooms in our house. These would be an office for Angie, an exam room, and a gym. It is a unique environment that allows me to focus on the people I work with: One at a time." -Paul

Want to stay active, independent and doing the things you enjoy as you get older? Physical therapists have some ideas about what matters most.

The New York Times asked physical therapists which exercises they consider especially important for healthy aging—and the answers are a good reminder that strength, balance and mobility aren’t just about fitness. They’re about maintaining the freedom to live your life.

Worth a read—and worth putting into practice.

Try these simple movements to stay strong and limber.

Confession time: Even the physical therapist's wife didn't do her home exercises.

She figured her sore knee needed rest, not stretching. Sound familiar?

Then she finally followed the instructions exactly as prescribed—and the difference surprised her before the first day was over.

If you've ever been given exercises by a PT (or a doctor) and thought, "I'll get around to them," this story might change your mind.

Confession time... A while back, my knee started hurting. Since I happen to live with a physical therapist, I did what many people do. I asked Paul to take a look. He evaluated my knee, explained what was going on, and gave me a few simple stretches. Did I do them? Well...not really. You see,...

Drums for wellness?

"Drumming gives all four limbs a workout with each one acting almost independently of the others." – Paul the Physical Therapist

We've seen quite a few musicians at Cedar Hill Physical Therapy & Wellness Center over the past month or two. Add that to Paul learning to play the drums. If you play an instrument (including voice) and are having pain, contact us. If you know a musician, pass this along. Physical therapy can help w...

What I like about being a physical therapist is that it opens the door to optimism for patients experiencing pain or limited movement. Knowing you can count on physical therapy is an emotional resource.

Well, for one thing, there’s physical therapy. It can reliably relieve pain and help keep you moving more freely. So there's that! Now hold that thought. Did you know that optimism about health care options may be healthful in itself? It might even help you live longer and enjoy a better quality o...

No fear Snek!

Cedar Hill really is a hill, and it’s sort of rural, although well inside the town limits. But Angie and I are determined to bring nature closer to us. Right now, we’re loving our pond garden, a few steps from our deck.
This year, we’ve made friends with Snek the Northern Water Snake. Don.....

Yay, Snek!

"This is a Northern Water Snake. Harmless to humans, they feed on fish and amphibians. Unfortunately, they are often confused for a Cottonmouth Snake. We have (at least) two living in and basking on the rocks around our pond at our home, Cedar Hill. They enter the water to feed."

Thanks to Paul Weiss of Greensboro for sharing this "snek" (or, if you prefer, nope rope, danger noodle, or cutie!) with us.

A compelling new study reported in the Washington Post reinforces what many of us already believe. Exercise works as a powerful, drug-free tool in the fight against cancer. It improves treatment outcomes and, even more importantly, lowers the risk of developing cancer in the first place.

Physical therapy started as a way to help injured people regain mobility. In the early 1900s, practitioners focused on helping World War I veterans and polio patients recover. It functioned more as a fix than a true therapy. Not so, today. Today, physical therapy plays a central role in modern medic...

Before you laugh, consider this: the habits that keep your dog happy, active, and engaged might be exactly what keep you healthy, too.

What if you could help someone stay independent—not just longer, but better?

Mobility isn’t just movement—it’s freedom, confidence, and connection. And as we age, it becomes one of the strongest predictors of how well we live.

Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with the Edward R. Murrow Kiwanis Club at Leonard Recreation Center in Greensboro, NC. My subject came easily, as it’s something I think about every day. It’s the difference between lifespan and healthspan. Most people are familiar with lifespan. That.....
