📺 📺 Our very own Chris Tems, MD, an physician at HCA HealthONE Aurora in Aurora, CO, was recently featured on ABC Denver7 for the pioneering extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) work he has done at the facility.

Dr. Tems championed the creation of the hospital's new Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (ECPR) program — the first comprehensive ECPR program in Colorado and one of only a few programs like it across the nation. Dr. Tems and the Aurora medical team's use of ECMO has already saved many lives once considered lost.

🚨 Staff Achievement 🚨 Big congratulations to Elizabeth Askew, clinical care coordinator for our Blue Sky Neurosciences division!

Elizabeth and her volunteer team at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter in California were just honored with the County of Santa Cruz’s “Be the Difference Award” for their outstanding work at the shelter! Since 2023, Elizabeth has served as a co-leader for the shelter’s Dog Enrichment team, dedicating her Sundays to working with kennel-stressed dogs through physical activities, agility exercises, puzzles, one-on-one socialization, and comforting techniques.

For Elizabeth, giving back to animals is a lifelong passion. Her commitment to animal welfare spans decades. In the mid-1990s, she was part of the very first organization in Montana to become nationally certified as an animal-assisted therapy handler. Since then, she has trained five therapy dogs to bring comfort to patients in hospitals and partnered with many other animal rescue organizations.

“Dogs have provided me with immense unconditional love and support,” Elizabeth said, “and I am dedicated to giving back to them in every way possible.”

Congratulations, Elizabeth! Great work! 👏

On March 15, Matthew White's life changed in an instant when he suffered a stroke. A little more than two months later, on May 21, he stood outside Research Medical Center (Kansas City, MO) for the hospital's "Great Save" event, which takes place each year during EMS Week. The emotional celebration reunited Matthew with the medical professionals who teamed to save his life. Among the group of heroes was CarePoint Blue Sky Neurosciences' Ala Saleh, MD, the stroke neurologist who treated Matthew at Research 67 days earlier.

"I don't have an impact on them; they have an impact on me," Matthew said at the event. "I'm crying. I just want them to know what they do everyday matters."

Last night, we gathered at The Capital Grille (Lone Tree, CO) to celebrate, say thank you, raise a glass, laugh, cry … and say goodbye (well, kinda) to our amazingly talented Chief People Officer, Gwen Dooley, who is set to embark on her next professional adventure.

Gwen joined CarePoint in December 2017 as our Director of Clinical Operations, quickly ascending to Vice President of Operations before becoming our Vice President of People, Growth, & Strategy in early 2024 and our CPO early the next year. Along the way, she designed and launched leadership development programs for both our clinicians and staff, created a sabbatical program for our clinicians, and oversaw the development of CarePoint’s most recent strategic plan, just to name a few of the highlights. Above all, she positively impacted every physician, every advanced practice provider, and every staff member she encountered — often in more ways than one.

Fortunately, Gwen will remain connected to CarePoint, serving as an independent leadership consultant and coach … we just couldn’t let her walk away completely 😉

A Colorado husband and father is alive today thanks to his family's swift action and CarePoint Blue Sky Neurosciences stroke neurologist Cynthia Dickerson's expert care. After Mike Studeny collapsed one morning in February, he was quickly taken to a Denver-area emergency room, where Dr. Dickerson was the first physician to treat him. Within minutes of arriving at the ER, Mike was scanned and a clot was found. After being treated with medication, he was taken in for a procedure.

"Within 12 minutes of him being on the table, the clot was removed," Dickerson recently told CBS Colorado. "When I saw him in the ICU about 30 minutes later, he felt back to normal. He was talking and moving. Both he and his wife were extremely grateful."
