Goshen Fair weekend! We had a booth there for chair massage for 13 years in a row! It was our best event of the year for meeting new clients! We were NOT welcomed our first year.
They did not think we would be an "appropriate" addition to the fair. Luckily, I was on the board of directors for the Torrington Red Cross at the time and another person on the board knew someone on the Goshen Fair board. (Sadly, it is ALWAYS who you know!) They helped arrange to allow our booth to be right next to the Red Cross booth and they promised to "keep an eye on us"! The fair wanted us to put curtains up around our booth to hide what we were doing but we refused.
Within three years, we needed a much larger booth and we consistently had a two hour waiting line for people to receive a ten minute massage! We went from a 6 foot space to a 30 foot space over those years.
It was a huge undertaking to set up the space with our temporary walls, carpeting, massage chairs and tables. Exhausting! The Therapists had so much difficulty getting through traffic to work there that it became more unsustainable. Of course the $1,000 fee for 2.5 days also played into our having to step away from the venue. Some years we were rained/snowed out and others we were cooked out of the weekend!
We also had a booth at the Bethlehem Fair for a few years and the Harwinton Fair for 20 years! We were even crazy enough to have a booth at the Big E for 17 days one year with 59 Therapists! (We needed 159!!!)
