🚨 Every second, an older adult falls in the United States.
37 million falls every year.
9 million fall injuries.
3 million emergency department visits.
1 million hospitalizations.
41,000 deaths.
Those numbers should make all of us pay attention.
But here's the question I don't think we're asking enough:
What happens AFTER the fall?
We have spent decades talking about fall prevention and we absolutely should.
But falls are still happening.
And when someone is on the floor and unable to get themselves back up, the answer in far too many environments is still:
Call more staff.
Manually lift them.
Or call 911.
That is beginning to change.
Communities across the country are addressing non-emergency lift-assist calls. Bellingham, Washington recently approved a $1,000 fee for licensed care facilities using 911 for non-emergency lifting assistance.
And OSHA has been clear: minimize manual patient lifting and eliminate it whenever possible. Proper body mechanics alone are not enough.
So maybe the next evolution in fall safety isn't just better Fall Prevention.
Maybe it's finally building a real standard for Fall Recovery.
Assessment.
Equipment.
Training.
A repeatable process.
Protect the person who fell.
Protect the person helping them back up.
And keep emergency resources available for emergencies.
We know people will fall. It's time we get just as serious about how we get them back up.
