RSV: Who needs protection this season?

RSV is a common fall and winter virus that can be serious for infants and older adults. Prevention can significantly reduce severe illness and hospitalization.

👶 INFANTS

Most infants should be protected through one of two options:

🤰 Maternal RSV vaccine
Given at 32–36 weeks of pregnancy, typically September–January, to pass protective antibodies to the baby.

OR

👶 Infant RSV antibody
Nirsevimab or clesrovimab can protect babies entering their first RSV season when maternal vaccination protection isn’t present. These are long-acting antibodies, not vaccines.

Some high-risk children ages 8–19 months may also qualify for protection before their second RSV season.

👵 ADULTS

RSV vaccination is recommended for:

* Everyone 75+
* Adults 50–74 at increased risk, including those with certain chronic conditions, weakened immune systems, frailty, or nursing-home residence

RSV vaccination is not currently annual. If you’ve already received it, another dose is not currently recommended.

🔑 Handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact when sick can also help prevent spread.
