There's a supplement that just got recalled again this month. Not because it didn't work — because instead of what's on the label, it had a plant in it that can stop your heart.

It's called tejocote root. Sold as capsules or "pieces," marketed as a natural weight-loss aid, all over Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and TikTok Shop.

Since a 2023 CDC report first flagged it, the FDA has been testing these products. The warning list is now up to 33 of them. The most recent recall — Niwali Tejocote Capsules and Pieces — was announced September 21, 2026, after FDA lab testing confirmed the problem. This is reportedly the brand's second recall.

Instead of tejocote, a lot of these test positive for yellow oleander — a poisonous plant containing cardiac glycosides, the same class of toxin as foxglove. In the FDA's own words, exposure "can cause neurologic, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular adverse health effects that may be severe, or even fatal."

To be clear: no illnesses have been reported tied to the most recent recall specifically, and this isn't a reason to be afraid of supplements as a category. It's a reason to be specific about where you buy them.

A 2023 CDC sampling found the substitution in 9 of 10 tejocote products it tested. That's not "one bad batch." That's a supply chain with nobody checking the bottle before it ships.

If you or someone you know has taken a tejocote product: stop immediately, and call your doctor or poison control — even without symptoms.

This is the entire case for buying from a real store instead of a random listing. Everything on our shelves is verified, in date, and something we can explain to your face.

Collagen searches are up over 500% this year. Before you buy it, here's what the biggest review ever done on it actually found.

Anglia Ruskin University pulled together 16 systematic reviews, 113 randomized controlled trials, and almost 8,000 people. The honest breakdown:

Real, credible benefit: skin elasticity and hydration, and joint pain/stiffness — and it gets better the longer you stay consistent.

Modest at best: muscle mass and tendon structure.

No meaningful effect: post-workout recovery or soreness — which is exactly how a lot of collagen gets marketed. If you bought it expecting it to help you recover, the data doesn't back that up.

We wrote the full breakdown — every study, every caveat — on our blog this week. No sales pitch, just what the research actually shows.

Read it, then come see the one we actually recommend: 1st Phorm Collagen Unflavored. One scoop a day, dissolves clean into anything.

There's a new creatine study, and for once it's not aimed at 22-year-olds.

Texas A&M put 64 adults — ages 45 to 65, average age 55 — on 10 grams of creatine a day for 12 weeks. One group did nothing else. No training program, no diet change.

That group still gained about 2.4 lbs of lean muscle and got measurably stronger.

Add supervised training and a real diet on top of it, and the creatine group gained almost 3 lbs of lean muscle and lost more body fat than diet and exercise did on their own. It didn't move the needle on cardio — that's not what this supplement is for, and it never has been.

Two things worth knowing before you act on this.

The dose in the study was 10 grams. Most labels recommend 3 to 5. This study didn't test one dose against the other, so don't assume more is automatically better — that's not what the data actually says.

And this one was funded by a philanthropic foundation, not a supplement company. In an industry where a lot of research is paid for by the people selling the product, that's worth saying out loud.

A 2025 review of 685 clinical trials found creatine causes no more side effects than a placebo. It's one of the most studied, most boring, most reliable supplements that exists. It just took this long for the research to catch up to people over 45.

If you're trying to hold onto muscle as you get older — not chase a look, just hold onto function — this is worth a real conversation about dose and timing. Not a scroll-and-buy.

Come ask me. I'll tell you exactly where you fall in this.
