It was wonderful to welcome Emily Longnecker and cameraman Steve Rhodes from WTHR Channel 13 to the Morning Light Home this morning to share Patrick’s story ahead of his Making Memories experience this weekend.

Be sure to tune in to WTHR Channel 13 this evening, where Patrick’s story is expected to air shortly after 6:15 p.m.

Patrick will be attending Christopher Cross at the Palladium in Carmel, a wish that holds special meaning for him and one that has brought together so many people to make it possible.

The interview was a touching reminder of the kind, humble, and caring person Patrick is.

We’re grateful to Emily and Steve for helping share Patrick’s journey and shine a light on Morning Light’s mission to provide a free home for the terminally ill in need.

Last night, Morning Light had the privilege of taking the stage as one of the five finalists for the 2026 Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis Change Maker Grant.

Our Executive Director, Madison Wood-Gonzalez, shared the story behind Safe Passage: A Secure and Accessible Home at Life’s End and the importance of ensuring that individuals facing terminal illness, homelessness, poverty, or isolation have a safe and loving place to call home during life’s final chapter.

While we were not selected as this year’s Change Maker, we were honored to receive a finalist grant and to stand alongside four outstanding nonprofit organizations doing transformative work throughout Central Indiana.

Thank you to the members of Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis for creating an extraordinary community of women whose collective giving continues to make a lasting impact across our city.

We’ll be sharing video from Madison’s presentation in our June newsletter. Stay tuned!

When Patrick recently became a resident at the Morning Light Home, he shared his love of music and spoke about how, throughout his medical journey, he would often wake from procedures with Christopher Cross songs playing in his mind. The music stayed with him, offering comfort during some difficult moments.

So when we learned that Christopher Cross would be performing at the Palladium in Carmel, we wondered if there might be a way to make it happen.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Julia Shildmyer and our friends at the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts, Patrick now has tickets to see Christopher Cross perform live. Not just seats but one of the best boxes in the house!

For someone facing the challenges of terminal illness, it goes without saying that these moments matter more than ever, and indeed remind us all that everyday is a gift to treasure.

Patrick said he is taking a friend he went to high-school with, to relive the songs that have accompanied him through much of his journey. It is a beautiful example of what our Making Memories Program is all about and Morning Light will keep you posted as to how it goes! 🎶

At Morning Light, our Making Memories Program isn’t always about big celebrations or once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Sometimes, it’s about helping someone feel at home. Jeannie often spoke about her childhood in Jamaica, the sound of waterfalls, the beauty of the sea, and the sense of peace those memories brought her. So, in our own small way, we set about bringing a little of that feeling to her. The gentle sound of flowing water, a view that invited reflection, the love of family gathered close, and thoughtful acts of kindness from volunteers like Yas, who brought Jeannie handmade bracelets, all became part of her Making Memories journey.

A beach scene now hangs beside her bed. Waterfall images and fountains help recreate the sounds and sights she loved. On warm days, she enjoyed spending time outdoors, listening to the water and taking in the fresh air. None of it was extravagant, but all of it was meaningful.

Because sometimes the greatest gift we can give is not an adventure, but a sense of peace.

Today, the lantern is lit for Jeannie. She has not been doing well in recent days, and our thoughts are with her family and loved ones. Through her gentle spirit and warm smile, Jeannie has touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Like all Morning Light residents, she has been an honor to know and care for. Please keep Jeannie and her family in your thoughts.

Congratulations to the latest cohort of students from the Morning Light Training Center! Through our partnership with TeenWorks, these students are taking an important step toward careers in healthcare while gaining hands-on experience, professional skills, and the confidence that comes from serving others. Together, our organizations are helping create sustainable futures for young people while training the next generation of caregivers.

Morning Light has long believed that compassionate care begins with education. Our CNA Training Program provides students with valuable healthcare experience and the opportunity to learn in a real-world setting alongside dedicated caregivers who make a difference every day.

We are incredibly proud of this group and excited to see where their journeys take them. Thank you to TeenWorks for helping connect motivated young people with meaningful career opportunities and pathways to success.

Please join us in welcoming Ashley Bilansky to Morning Light! Ashley is completing her social work practicum with Morning Light this summer under the guidance of our Social Services Manager, Kate Nickelson. While much of Ashley’s experience has been working with children, teens, and the juvenile justice system, she chose Morning Light because she wanted to step outside her comfort zone and learn how to support individuals and families facing grief, loss, and end-of-life journeys.

“I really want to be able to support people through times of grief,” Ashley shared. “Morning Light. I’m hoping to learn how to help people through those difficult moments and Morning Light is such a special organization.”

Ashley admits that working in end-of-life care has been a new experience, but she has already discovered something powerful about the residents who call Morning Light home.

“knowing that I can come into a room and see a smile and put a smile on the resident’s faces makes a huge difference and teaches me something everyday.”

We are grateful to have Ashley as part of the team this summer and excited to be part of her journey toward earning her master’s degree in social work. 💙🏡

It takes a community to provide exceptional end-of-life care. At Morning Light, we are proud to partner with outstanding hospice providers across Central Indiana, including Anew Hospice Care, whose team regularly visits the home to support residents and families. Their volunteers and staff are familiar faces around Morning Light, whether they’re spending time with residents, joining in a game of bingo, or simply sharing a conversation.

Recently, Anew’s Camille Green and volunteer Tina Graham took some time to meet our resident chickens, one of the many ways we create a home-like environment. Our chickens are cared for by residents, volunteers, and staff alike, providing a unique form of animal-assisted companionship that helps foster community and meaningful daily experiences.

Together with hospice partners like Anew Hospice, we are able to ensure that individuals facing the end of life have not only expert medical support, but also a safe, welcoming home where they can continue making memories, building friendships, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures.

“Morning Light’s home is by far the best facility I’ve ever been in. People are so caring, it’s so clean, it’s efficient, it’s cheerful.” High praise from our volunteer Jim this morning. Jim worked as a print journalist, he now spends his Tuesdays kindly donating some of his time to the Morning Light Home, lending a hand wherever it’s needed and bringing his good humor along with him.

Jim has also become known for his unique commute. Rather than driving, he arrives on his custom bicycle, traveling Indianapolis’ network of trails to reach the Morning Light Home each week. It’s a journey that reflects the same spirit he brings to volunteering: thoughtful, independent, and always ready for the next adventure.

We’re grateful for volunteers like Jim who choose to spend their time helping our residents and supporting our mission. People like Jim help make Morning Light the welcoming and compassionate home that it is.

It’s National Best Friends Day, so we grabbed a photo of our dedicated caregiver Jorge, who is a true friend to so many of our residents (and staff!). 🏡🙌

Whether he’s serving lunch, sharing a laugh, offering encouragement, or simply taking the time to listen, Jorge brings friendship to every part of the Morning Light Home. It’s often the small, everyday moments of connection that mean the most, and Jorge has a gift for making people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for.

Our caregivers are incredible people, and Morning Light is proud to have built such an amazing team. Together, they provide compassionate care, friendship, and support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to our neighbors in urgent need of a loving home.

Please join us in welcoming Patrick, the newest resident of the Morning Light Home. Patrick is a true gentleman who spent many years working on communications towers, working high above the ground and in all kinds of weather to keep people connected.

When I asked Patrick what he was most proud of in life, he didn’t mention a job title, an award, or an accomplishment. Instead, he said:

“I’ve never deliberately hurt anyone. I’ve always tried to be the guy to look out for people, even when it’s been tough to do so.”

That simple answer tells you a lot about the kind of person Patrick is. A lifelong music lover. We’re also excited to be working on a special Making Memories experience centered around his passion for music.

We are grateful to have Patrick as part of the Morning Light family, and thankful for the incredible support of our community. Because of that support, Morning Light can continue providing a safe, loving home at no cost for neighbors facing some of life’s most difficult moments.

Every resident who comes through our doors has a unique story. It is our privilege to honor those stories and ensure that no one faces the end of life alone.
