The pelvic tilt in the Spinal Fitness book is a precise lower-back exercise, and the setup is what makes it work.
You lie with your hips cradled in the PowerCushion cutout. The low back from L4 upward rests on the cushion, and the sacrum hangs free below it.
Two forces then act on the pelvis. Steady resistance presses straight down on the front of the pelvis, about 70 pounds in Dr. John Scherger's analysis. At the same time your re**us abdominis draws the p***c bone up toward the rib cage.
The pelvis rotates around the cushion. The front tilts up, the sacrum moves down and back, and L5 shears backward relative to L4. In the analysis that shear is 149 pounds at the sacrum and 7 pounds by the top of the low back.
The facet joints catch that motion, bone against bone, so the low back is held in place by its own architecture while your abdominal muscles do the lifting.
The book's cues: keep both legs fully extended, toes drawn slightly back, upper body resting down, and exhale as you draw the pelvis toward the ribs. Every rep is slow and controlled.
The Power Cushion is coming soon at Creatrix in soft and medium densities.
Strain is welcome and pain is a stop. Anyone with a spinal condition should check with a healthcare provider before starting.
How the PowerCushion holds L4, frees the sacrum and turns 70 lb on the pelvis into a posterior shear of L5 on L4 that the facet joints stop.
