Can we PLEASE stop talking about GLPs like they’re only about weight loss? 👏
Because the more research that comes out, the more fascinating these medications become.
Yes, weight loss can be an incredible benefit for someone who needs it. But researchers are finding benefits that go WAY beyond a number on the scale.
❤️ Heart health. One GLP medication has actually been FDA approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke in certain adults with cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity.
🔥 Inflammation. Research has shown reductions in certain markers of inflammation. And this one is personal for me because one of the biggest things I noticed after starting a GLP was how much better I FELT.
🦵 Joint pain & mobility. In a major study involving people with obesity and knee osteoarthritis, GLP therapy was associated with significantly greater improvements in knee pain and physical function compared with placebo.
🩸 Blood sugar & insulin resistance. This is literally where these medications started! GLPs can improve blood sugar control and have been used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes for YEARS.
🫀 Cardiometabolic health. Research has also shown improvements in things like blood pressure, waist circumference, blood sugar and lipid levels.
🫘 Kidney health. Research involving people with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease found that GLP therapy reduced the risk of major kidney-related outcomes and slowed the loss of kidney function.
😴 Sleep apnea. This one blew my mind. A medication within this family became the FIRST medication FDA approved for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.
And we are STILL learning.
THAT is what fascinates me about GLPs.
I didn’t start mine because I needed to lose 80 pounds. I had already done the majority of that work before I ever touched one.
For me, this became about so much more than losing weight.
The quieting of the food noise. The inflammation. Being able to fuel my body instead of constantly fighting it. Feeling GOOD while I work on getting stronger.
So when someone reduces GLPs to “the skinny shot,” I just shake my head.
Because science is showing us that this conversation is SO much bigger than skinny.
And I have a feeling we’re only getting started. 💜
For educational purposes only. Research findings and potential benefits vary by medication and individual, and some findings apply only to specific patient populations. GLPs are prescription medications with potential risks and side effects and should be discussed with a licensed healthcare provider.
Maintaining a 95 lb weight loss is doable with my GLP-1!
