You stopped taking him places.

It started with one hard afternoon. The birthday party. The restaurant. The aisle in the store with an audience.

Then the list got shorter without a decision being made. Nobody chose it. It happened one skipped invitation at a time.

It was not about your child. It was about answering the same question forty times in an afternoon. He does not talk much yet.

That is exhausting in a way nobody around you sees. You are managing your child and everybody else's reaction to your child at the same time.
An answer is worth having, partly for you. It gives you something more useful to say than not yet, and it gives it to you once rather than forty times.

Reading together does not require sitting still.

Most books do not survive first contact. Pages get turned three at a time, the book gets closed, somebody leaves the room.

That is still reading together. You do not have to finish a book to have read one.

Follow the page they stopped on. If your child is looking at the dog, the book is about the dog now. The words on the page are optional.

Talk about the picture instead of reading the line. Naming, pointing and waiting does more than getting through the printed sentence word for word.
And leave gaps. Stop just before the word your child knows, look at them, and wait longer than feels comfortable.

First come the words. Then come the joins.

Single words arrive first, one at a time, and mostly as labels. The things and people your child want to point at.

Then two go together, which is a bigger step than it looks. More juice. Daddy shoe. Go car. Two words is where labels turn into sentences.

The small connecting words come later. The ones that hold a sentence together arrive after the ones that carry the meaning.

Which is how a child can have plenty of words and very few sentences. Vocabulary and grammar do not have to move at the same speed, and often they do not.

Where your child sits in that sequence is the useful question. Not how many words they have. What they are doing with the ones they already have.

Understanding you is only half of language.

He understands everything I say is usually true. It is also the sentence that holds up more evaluations than any other.

Some of what looks like understanding is the routine. Shoes by the door at the same time every morning does not require the word shoes.

Take the cues away and you learn more. Same instruction, different room, nothing to point at. That is one of the things an evaluation sets up on purpose.

Understanding and talking can move at different speeds. A child can take in far more than they send back out, and the size of that gap is worth measuring rather than guessing at.

It is not a reason to panic and it is not a reason to wait. It is information, and information is what changes the shape of the help.

When words run out, behavior speaks.

A two-year-old has far more to say than words to say it with.

The gap between what your child means and what they can actually get out is where most of the frustration lives.

So, it comes out sideways. Pointing turns into pulling. Asking turns into shouting. The cup goes off the table.

That is not defiance. It is a message with no other route out. The behavior is doing the job the words cannot do yet.

Which is why consequences on their own rarely land.

A consequence does not hand a child a word to use.

The message is still sitting there afterward, with nowhere to go.

The thing that helps is a shorter route. A sign, a picture, one word your child can actually produce. When getting the message out costs less, less of it arrives as behavior.

If the words are the part that is missing, that is worth having looked at.

Before speech, someone should check the hearing.

It is the step that gets skipped most often, and it is the one that changes what everything else means.

A child builds speech out of what comes in. If the sound arriving is muffled, what comes back out follows.

Ear infections are common at this age, and fluid can sit behind the eardrum long after the infection itself has cleared.

Your child does not seem unwell. They are hearing you through a wall.

It also comes and goes, which is why it hides. Some weeks your child answers you from another room. Some weeks they answer only when you are standing right in front of them. Both can happen in the same month.

A hearing screen does not hurt, and it does not require your child to say a single word. It tells you whether sound is getting in, before anyone starts asking why words are not coming out.

Ask your pediatrician for one, then bring the result with you. Nobody is guessing that way, and you are not telling the whole story twice.

You see a different child at home.

At drop off he is quiet and easy. In a room with fifteen other children, a child who says very little often reads as well behaved, and everyone tells you he is doing fine.

At home he has things to tell you and no way to tell them. You are the one who hears the attempts, the ones that do not land, and what happens afterward.

Here is the part worth holding onto. You are both describing the same child accurately. A classroom sees a child inside a group. You see a child trying to be understood by the person it matters most to.

One of those views simply has more hours in it. Nobody spends more time listening to your child than you do.

You are allowed to ask for a look anyway. You do not need anyone else to agree with you first.

Therapy is one hour.

Home is the rest.

The session is where the plan gets made.

It is where a therapist works out what your child can already do, what comes next, and how to get there.

The week is where the plan gets used. In the car, at the sink, at breakfast, in the ordinary moments where your child wants something and has to ask for it.

That is why you are in the room.

Not to watch.

To pick up the two or three moves that work for your child, so they keep happening after the door closes.

It is not homework. Nobody is handing you a folder of worksheets to get through. It is the same day you were already going to have, with one thing done differently.

And everyone else working with your child should know those same moves. When they do, you are not the only person keeping track of what helps.

You have asked yourself if this is your fault.

Maybe at two in the morning.

Maybe out loud once, to one person, and never again after that.

You have been back through all of it.

The screen time. The move. The year you went back to work. The pregnancy you worried your way through.

Somewhere in there, you decided, must be the thing you did.

Speech and language differences are not caused by ordinary parenting. That is the part clinicians say plainly, and it is worth hearing plainly.

What you did do is notice. You are the reason anyone is looking at all.
So, take the question to someone who can actually answer it. An evaluation tells you what is happening with your child's speech. It does not hand you a verdict on your parenting, because that was never the question it asks.

Every family has words that only work inside the house.

Bapa for grandpa. Nana for banana. A sound that means the blue cup, and only the blue cup, and everybody in the kitchen knows it.

Those are not mistakes. They are your child telling you something, and it working.

They are also the first words to disappear, once the real ones arrive. Write them down before they go.

Tell us in the comments. What is the word your child says that only your family understands? We read every one.
