I BROKE ONE OF MY OWN TRAINING RULES. 😬

I went downstairs to practice yoga after taking some time away from it.

I knew what I used to be able to do. So instead of paying attention to what my body could do that day, I forced myself into the range of motion I remembered.

The next day? My lower back hurt.

And I knew exactly why.

I had tried to make my body perform like it did six months or a year ago instead of assessing the body I had THAT DAY.

This is something I see all the time.

We remember the weights we used to lift.
The classes we used to take.
How flexible we used to be.
How hard we used to train.

But your previous ability isn’t your starting point.

Today’s capacity is.

That doesn’t mean you’re declining or that you can’t regain strength, mobility, or capacity. It means you have to build from where you are now—not force your body to prove where it used to be.

And apparently, even after 40 years of teaching this stuff, I occasionally need the reminder too. 😂

Your body didn’t suddenly stop working because you turned 50.

Yes, our bodies change as we age. Muscle mass, recovery, hormones, bone density and our capacity to tolerate certain types of training can change.

But too often, age gets blamed for everything.

A painful knee.
Less strength.
More stiffness.
Feeling less confident doing things you used to do.

After nearly 40 years of working with bodies, I don’t automatically look at those things and think, “Well, you’re getting older.”

I want to know what changed.

What muscles became weaker?
What have you stopped doing?
What have you been avoiding because it hurts?
And what has your body learned to compensate for along the way?

Your body may need a different strategy at 50, 60 or 70—but different does not mean incapable.

We need to stop teaching people to fear their changing bodies and start teaching them how to understand them.

That’s the work I’m here to do.

A diagnosis is information. It is not your identity.

Sometimes the most limiting thing we carry isn’t the diagnosis itself—it’s the story we begin telling ourselves because of it:

I can’t do that anymore.
My body is too damaged.
This is just what happens as I get older.
I’ll always be this way.

Your diagnosis may help explain where you are today. But it does not automatically determine what your body may be capable of tomorrow.

When we stop defining ourselves by what hurts, what feels weak, or what we’ve been told we “can’t” do, we can start asking a much more useful question:

What CAN I build from here?

That’s a conversation I believe we need to have more often—especially as we get older.
