**Helping Your Cat Love Their Carrier!**

Does your cat disappear the moment you take out the carrier? You're not alone! With a little practice, you can help your cat see the carrier as a safe, comfortable place instead of something to fear.

**A few tips to get started:**

**Leave it out:** Keep the carrier open in a familiar area so your cat can explore it on their own.

**Make it cozy:** Add a soft blanket, favorite toy, or familiar bedding to make it inviting.

**Reward curiosity:** Offer treats for approaching, exploring, or stepping inside the carrier. Never force them in!

**Try feeding inside:** Gradually move meals farther into the carrier as your cat becomes comfortable.

**Practice in small steps:** Once your cat is comfortable going inside, slowly practice closing the door and briefly picking up the carrier.

**Be patient!** Some cats adjust in days, while others need weeks. Short, positive sessions can make a big difference.

**The biggest tip? Don't wait until appointment day to start!** Making the carrier part of everyday life can help make future veterinary visits less stressful for both you and your cat.

At Holistic Veterinary Options, we want every visit to be as calm and comfortable as possible.

Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001, and the many lives forever changed that day.

At HVO, we’re reminded every day of the importance of compassion, connection, and caring for one another — values that extend beyond the people and animals we serve.

Today, we honor those we lost, the families who continue to carry their memories, and the first responders, service members, and countless individuals who showed extraordinary courage and kindness.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

🦨 Skunked?! Here’s what to do first!

If your dog—or adventurous cat—gets sprayed by a skunk, don’t reach for the hose right away! Water can make the odor more difficult to remove.

Dr. Jerry Dragoo of the Institute for the Betterment of Skunks and Skunk Reputations recommends this fresh, homemade de-skunking solution:

🧴 Skunk Odor Removal Recipe

1 quart (32 oz) of 3% hydrogen peroxide
⅓ cup baking soda
1–2 tablespoons liquid dish soap or pet shampoo

How to use it:

Mix the ingredients fresh right before use. Do not store the mixture.
Apply directly to the affected fur and work it in thoroughly.
Avoid the eyes and mouth.
Rinse your pet thoroughly after treatment.
Repeat if needed.

🦨 A few important tips:

Treat your pet as soon as possible—the sooner, the better!
If you still smell skunk after rinsing, you may have missed an area.
If the odor seems to return when your pet gets wet later, that can also indicate that some of the skunk spray remains.
Hydrogen peroxide may lighten the color of your pet’s fur.
Keep the mixture away from the eyes and mouth, and use caution when applying around the face.

And remember: make a fresh batch every time. This mixture should not be stored.

Hopefully you never need this recipe—but if you do, save this post! 🦨🐾

Recipe attributed to Dr. Jerry Dragoo, skunk researcher and founder of the Dragoo Institute for the Betterment of Skunks and Skunk Reputations.

🍂 **Fall Allergies: It’s Not Just a Spring Problem!** 🐾

When we think about seasonal allergies, spring is usually the first season that comes to mind. But for many dogs and cats, **fall can bring just as many allergy triggers!**

As we head into the next couple of months, several plants and environmental allergens can contribute to that familiar itch, including:

🌿 **Ragweed** – one of the biggest fall allergy triggers
🌾 **Weeds and grasses** – many continue releasing pollen into early fall
🍂 **Mold spores** – falling leaves, damp soil, and decaying vegetation can create ideal conditions for mold
🌱 **Other late-season plants** – different weeds and plants can release pollen well into autumn

If your pet starts licking their paws, scratching, rubbing their face, or developing recurrent ear or skin irritation this fall, **seasonal allergies could be part of the picture.**

And remember—itching isn't always “just allergies.” There can be multiple factors contributing to your pet's skin health, which is why identifying the underlying triggers is so important.

Is your pet an **autumn allergy sufferer?** 🍁🐶🐱

Call us at (608) 432-2522 to schedule an appointment! We are currently accepting new clients too!
