Stromatolite 🤎🌿

Stromatolites are some of Earth’s oldest fossils, dating back 3.4 billion years. They are brown, layered sedimentary rocks and fossils. They are found in shallow, warm, salty water around the world. For example, they are found in places like Shark Bay in Western Australia, where large colonies still grow today.
Stromatolites are created by tiny microorganisms, especially cyanobacteria. These microbes grow in layers and trap and bind sediment as they live and reproduce. Over a long period of time, the trapped sediment builds up into hard, layered structures that form stromatolites.

Epidote 💚🌲

Epidote can range from pale yellow to dark green, and its color comes partly from the iron within its chemical structure. Epidote is also known for its elongated, prismatic crystals and its relatively high hardness, around 6–7 on the Mohs scale! Its stunning appearance makes it a great mineral for any collector to add to their collection.
Epidote is also a mineral commonly found in metamorphic rocks, especially in areas where rocks have been altered by heat and pressure. It can also occur in igneous rocks and hydrothermal veins! 💛

Serpentine 🐍
Serpentine is found in subduction zones, mid-ocean ridges, and areas where tectonic plates collide. It often appears in mountain ranges like the Appalachians and the Alps. It forms when water reacts with rocks from deep within the Earth’s mantle, usually near ocean floors. This process transforms the minerals into a soft, often greenish rock.
On another note, serpentine can weather into distinctive serpentine soils that tend to have high levels of magnesium and potentially toxic concentrations of metals such as nickel and chromium, while being deficient in nutrients such as calcium, nitrogen, and phosphorus. These conditions make it difficult for plants to grow, but specialized plants have adapted to thrive in these environments!
