What does this mean for stomach cancer patients?

Over the past few weeks, we've explored three important changes the FDA is encouraging in cancer clinical trials:

• Looking beyond performance status alone when determining eligibility.
• Using laboratory values only when they are scientifically justified as a safety concern.
• Reducing unnecessary waiting periods between treatments when appropriate.

No single FDA guidance changes clinical trial eligibility overnight. But together, these recommendations encourage researchers and sponsors to design studies that better reflect real patients.

For stomach cancer—where clinical trials are limited and many patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage—that could mean improved access to research, faster enrollment, and stronger evidence for the people these treatments are ultimately intended to help.

Better clinical trials lead to better treatments. That's something worth celebrating.

🚨 GAME-CHANGING FDA APPROVAL 🚨

This is BIG news for people facing HER2-positive stomach and gastroesophageal cancer.

The FDA has approved a new first-line treatment combining:
🔹 TEVIMBRA® (tislelizumab), an immunotherapy
🔹 ZIIHERA® (zanidatamab), a bispecific HER2-targeted therapy
🔹 Chemotherapy

This new regimen is approved for adults with unresectable locally advanced or metastatic HER2-positive gastric, gastroesophageal junction or esophageal adenocarcinoma.

What makes this especially important? The treatment showed benefit regardless of PD-L1 status—including in patients with PD-L1-negative tumors.

This is a major change in the first-line treatment landscape and another powerful reminder that biomarker testing matters. Every patient should know their HER2 status before beginning treatment.

More options from the very start can mean more time, more milestones and more HOPE.

What if treatment could shrink a tumor enough that surgery isn't needed at all? That's the question the AACR-ADOPT-GEA trial is asking for patients with resectable stage 2-3 stomach and esophageal cancer. 💜

This first-of-its-kind study matches patients to targeted, biomarker-based treatment before surgery, with the goal of helping some patients avoid a gastrectomy or esophagectomy and preserve their stomach or esophagus altogether.

The first patient has now been enrolled and treated at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. Yale and UCLA are also actively screening patients, with more sites expected to open in the months ahead.
