Since the launch of Medicare Part D in 2006, the program has blossomed into a well-recognized service that is free, confidential and non-biased. SMP: Empowering Seniors to Prevent Medicare & Medicaid Fraud, offers assistance in educating beneficiaries on identifying and preventing Medicare and Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse. Upper Cumberland Development District received the grant to administer the SMP program in 2001. The grant is funded in part by Administration on Aging. Prior to January 2006, the program name was Senior Medicare Patrol Project. Both programs work hand in hand to assist all Tennesseans with their questions and concerns about Medicare issues.
