It is hard to believe that 25 years have passed since one of the most tragic attacks on our nation.

We will never forget the vulnerability we felt, the profound pain of losing so many innocent lives, or the countless families forever affected by these acts of terrorism. In a single day, our nation was changed forever.

Today, we honor the lives lost, the families who continue to carry their grief, and the courageous first responders who answered the call. We will always remember September 11, 2001.

❤️💛 SEPTEMBER IS HEALTHY AGING MONTH! 💛❤️

Growing older is something to celebrate — and taking care of yourself today can help you stay healthier, stronger, and more independent tomorrow.

Healthy aging isn't about doing everything perfectly. It's about paying attention to the things that can make a difference:

🩺 Keep up with routine checkups and recommended screenings.
🧪 Have your blood work completed as recommended and discuss the results with your healthcare provider.
🥗 Eat well and give your body the nutrition it needs.
🚶 Keep moving! Exercise appropriate for your abilities can support strength, balance, mobility, and overall well-being.
❤️ Manage stress and make time for the people and activities that bring you joy.
🙋 ASK FOR HELP! You don't have to manage everything alone.

Keeping track of appointments, specialists, medications, medical recommendations, and changing care needs can become overwhelming — especially when several providers are involved.

That's where a professional Case Manager can help!

Case Managers can help coordinate care, communicate with providers, organize appointments and services, advocate for your needs, and help families navigate the healthcare system.

❤️ Healthy aging is a team effort. Let us be part of your team!

❤️ Welcome to the Advocates for the Aging Family, Karen! ❤️

We are thrilled to welcome Karen Wernlund to the Advocates for the Aging team!

Karen brings 17 years of experience in case management and administrative roles, but what makes her especially suited to our mission is the deeply personal journey that first led her to senior advocacy.

In 2002, Karen moved from Colorado back to Florida to care for her father during the later years of his life. For eight years, she walked alongside him through major life transitions, cancer diagnoses, three joint replacements, medical appointments, medication management, transportation, community resources, and the everyday needs that come with aging. That experience gave Karen something that cannot simply be taught in a classroom: a personal understanding of what it means to advocate for someone you love.

After her father's passing, Karen pursued another lifelong goal—earning her college degree. In 2018, she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA from Elizabeth City State University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Her commitment to mental health and emotional wellness continued when she became accredited in Mental Health First Aid for Adults in 2023.

Karen has also served as a Funeral Coordinator, providing compassionate grief guidance to families during some of life's most difficult moments. She believes every individual deserves the space, dignity, and support to navigate life's transitions in their own way.

Most importantly, Karen shares the heart of our mission. Her passion is helping older adults maintain their dignity, quality of life, and independence while finding the resources and support they need.

At Advocates for the Aging, our clients become part of our extended family. We believe Karen's compassion, experience, and genuine desire to serve seniors will make her a wonderful addition to our team.

Please join us in giving Karen a warm welcome! We are so excited to have you with us, Karen! ❤️💛

Advocacy. Compassion. Dignity.
That's what caring for our seniors is all about.
