Our rockstar Forensic Nurse Examiners Katie and Brittany were out in St. Louis Park again last week to connect with 40 students on the topic of relationship violence. We're so grateful for the continued partnership with St. Louis Park Public Schools and the opportunity to do prevention work with the youth in our communities.

The Hennepin Assault Response Team is hiring casual forensic nurse examiners. As a forensic nurse examiner on our team, you'd provide medical forensic care to survivors of s*xual assault, intimate partner violence, and human trafficking at our 12 Minneapolis, MN metro area hospitals.

Our recent Forensic Nursing Office Hours session covered medical forensic exam tips and tricks my colleagues have gathered while facilitating SANE Clinical Skills Labs. Preparing content for this session prompted us to reflect on our history of these trainings, and how grateful we are to have had so many opportunities to do them. Since 2020, we've held 42 clinical skills lab trainings in 6 different states, reaching 554 learners!

For 25 years, Sexual Assault Awareness Month has brought communities together in the shared pursuit of ending s*xual violence. This April, we pause to honor survivors, recognize progress, and acknowledge the work that remains.

March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month. We want to highlight something that often goes unrecognized: survivors of strangulation can suffer brain injuries that need specialized care.

When someone experiences nonfatal strangulation, the lack of oxygen to the brain can cause lasting neurological damage. Too often, these survivors don't get connected to the brain injury specialists who could help them recover.

To bridge this gap, we've created a pathway that connects strangulation survivors directly to our traumatic brain injury program after their forensic exam. Through this referral, survivors can access neurologists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and other experts who understand how strangulation affects the brain.

We had an awesome time at the Hennepin County Government Center last week for our 6th annual Mock Court for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners! This 2-day training is designed to prepare SANEs and FNEs to provide fact and expert testimony during a criminal trial. The experience ends with an opportunity to practice testifying in a courtroom, facilitated by Hennepin County Attorney's Office prosecutors, and Hennepin County judges. Want to get involved? Next Mock Court will take place in early 2027.

For patients who are at risk for or are currently experiencing human trafficking or s*xual exploitation, our team of forensic nurses can provide trauma informed assessment, education, harm reduction supplies, and resource coordination, and can also liaise with law enforcement, if desired.

Through this work with our patients, we know that gift giving can be an insidious tactic used to facilitate s*xual exploitation. A gift giver in a position of power can make the recipient feel like they owe something that can be repaid via s*x.

So, in observance of Human Trafficking Prevention month, we're amplifying a timely message from the Administration of Children and Families:

Real gifts don’t need to be paid back.

Gifts don’t come with strings attached. No one has the right to force you to work or have s*x to repay them or show gratitude.

Ever wondered what a day looks like for a Forensic Nurse Examiner? Here's a glimpse:

1. On-Call at Home, 8 AM
Our FNE begins their on-call shift at home. They are on call from 8 AM - 8 PM.

2. A Call Comes In, 10 AM
The hospital operator tells the FNE that a patient has arrived who is interested in a medical forensic exam. The FNE gathers supplies and drives to the hospital.

3.Meeting the Patient, 11 AM
The FNE meets the patient at the hospital and obtains informed consent. Based on the patient’s wishes, the FNE makes a plan for the medical forensic exam.

4. Patient Discharge, 5 PM
The exam has been completed. The patient leaves, and the FNE stays to wrap up documentation and evidence packaging.

5. Back On-Call, 6:00
The FNE goes home and is back on-call for the last two hours of their shift. They may be called to do another exam.
