Don’t clean or sweep on New Year’s Day
You’ll “sweep away” luck and money.

Eat black-eyed peas and greens (U.S. South)
Peas = coins, greens = paper money → prosperity.

Open all the doors right at midnight
Let the old year out and the new year in.

Wear something new
Invites new opportunities.

Wear something red (especially in Latin cultures)
Red = good fortune, passion, success.

Keep cash in your pockets at midnight
So you won’t be broke all year.

No crying on New Year’s Day
It’s said to bring sadness for the whole year.

Don’t lend or borrow money on Jan 1
Or you’ll be “paying out” all year long.

Kiss someone at midnight
To ensure affection and connection follows you.

Make noise (fireworks, banging pots, music)
Tradition says it scares away bad spirits.

Eat 12 grapes at midnight (Spain + Latin America)
One grape for each month — make a wish with each one.
