“𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿 is also speaking to me.”

I've been thinking about that comment since 𝙇𝙊𝙊𝙆 𝘾𝙇𝙊𝙎𝙀𝙍.

There are so many ways we talk about choosing art.

We can talk about color. Size. Style. Where it might hang.

But sometimes our response happens before we've worked through any of those things.

A piece catches our attention.

We look away.

And then we look again.

Maybe we notice it every time we walk past it. Or find ourselves returning to its photograph. Or, as someone said about 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿, realize that it is somehow speaking to us.

I think that's worth paying attention to.

Not because every artwork that catches our attention needs to come home with us.

But because those moments can tell us something about what we genuinely respond to—before we start trying to explain why.

I learned something while everyone else was 𝙇𝙊𝙊𝙆𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝘾𝙇𝙊𝙎𝙀𝙍.

I found myself watching what you noticed.

Someone discovered the words embedded beneath the paint in 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝗰𝗵𝗼.

Someone couldn't initially see where the fiber was in 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗯𝘂𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗿—until I brought it closer. Then knowing that the mohair came from Daisy, and discovering Bonnie within the painting, changed the experience again.

Someone asked to get a closer look at the squirrel in 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱, 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗻𝗲.

And when I asked the giveaway winner to choose among four original paintings, her answer began:

“𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗜 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘀…”

That may be the thing I'm taking away from these three days.

We don't all notice the same thing.

We don't connect with the same stories.

And we certainly don't all choose the same artwork.

But paying attention gives us the chance to discover what matters to us.

𝙇𝙊𝙊𝙆 𝘾𝙇𝙊𝙎𝙀𝙍 may be over, but I don't think we're finished looking. 💜

Sometimes giving a small piece room to breathe is exactly what allows you to notice it.

𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙀𝙘𝙝𝙤 is only 6 × 6 inches.

Placed here, it isn't trying to fill the wall or compete with everything around it. Instead, it becomes one small point of saturated color among quieter surroundings—a place for your eye to land.

And because 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙀𝙘𝙝𝙤 contains layers of fabric, paper, lace, paint, hidden words, and dimensional fiber, getting closer offers an entirely different experience than seeing it from across the room.

That's something I love about smaller original artwork.

𝗜𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗲: 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿.

Do you tend to gravitate toward 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲—or 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺?

And this is the one she kept coming back to. 💜

Yesterday morning, I shared something the winner of my 𝙇𝙊𝙊𝙆 𝘾𝙇𝙊𝙎𝙀𝙍 giveaway, 𝗥𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗟., said when I asked her to choose from four original Fiber-Integrated Oil Paintings:

“𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗜 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘀…”

This was the one.

I couldn't have scripted a better ending to 𝙇𝙊𝙊𝙆 𝘾𝙇𝙊𝙎𝙀𝙍.

Because over these three days, we've talked about looking beyond what a photograph can show us, discovering the stories held within an artwork, and finally recognizing our own response to what we see.

Not which artwork we're supposed to like.

Not which one someone else would choose.

The one we keep coming back to.

“𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿 is also speaking to me.”

Someone wrote that during today's final 𝙇𝙊𝙊𝙆 𝘾𝙇𝙊𝙎𝙀𝙍 conversation, and I loved the way she said it.

Not that's the best one.

Not that's the one I'm supposed to like.

That one is speaking to me.

For three days, we've been 𝙇𝙊𝙊𝙆𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝘾𝙇𝙊𝙎𝙀𝙍.

We started with what photographs can't capture.

Then we explored the stories held within the artwork.

And today we talked about something much more personal:

How do you know when an artwork feels like yours?

This morning I shared the words of my giveaway winner as she made her choice:

“𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗜 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘀…”

And then during today's Live, another person told me 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿 was speaking to her.

Maybe that's the answer.

It isn't about finding the piece you're supposed to love.

It's noticing the one you keep coming back to.

Because that's exactly what we're going to talk about today.

Sometimes knowing the story really does change what you see.

Today during 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗖𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗘𝗥, I shared the story behind 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗯𝘂𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗿.

We looked more closely at the dimensional fiber, including mohair from Daisy—and I shared how Bonnie is quietly held within the painting, too.

Afterward, someone wrote:

“I didn't see her—love that you included the contributions from the animals and plants in your life into that piece.”

That stayed with me.

The painting was exactly the same before I told the story.

But now she could see something in it that hadn't been there for her before.

And that's so much of what today's conversation was about.

The artwork hasn't changed. Our experience of it has.

I create fiber-integrated oil paintings where dimensional natural fibers emerge from the painted surface.

Much of the material comes from animals I have raised and known, including Suri alpaca, Teeswater wool, and mohair. Each brings its own character, history, and connection to the work.

The fibers are not simply added to the painting. They become part of its structure, shifting the artwork between image and object, surface and form.

My work lives at the intersection of painting, fiber, and lived experience, rooted in material, memory, and connection to the natural world.

Art that rewards attention.

Sometimes knowing the story changes what you see.

Yesterday during 𝙇𝙊𝙊𝙆 𝘾𝙇𝙊𝙎𝙀𝙍, we discovered things that weren't obvious in photographs—the dimensionality of the fiber, the way the surface changes as I move a painting, and even words embedded beneath the paint in 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝗰𝗵𝗼.

Today we're going beneath the surface in a different way.

𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗖𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗘𝗥 — 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸

I'll be sharing several original paintings and the stories held within them—stories of materials, animals, memories, places, and some of the choices I made along the way.

One of them will be 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗯𝘂𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗿.
