I’ve been a Registered Dietitian for 20+ years and worked with thousands of women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. I can tell you with complete confidence: most of you aren’t failing at weight loss because you lack willpower.
You’re failing because you’re doing what USED to work in your 20s and 30s. Your body isn’t 27 anymore.
Here are the 5 things I need you to stop doing today:
❌1. Stop under-eating. Surviving on 1,200 calories and a prayer? You’re destroying your metabolism. Chronic under-eating tanks your thyroid, spikes cortisol, and eats your muscle for fuel. You need to eat MORE of the right things.
❌2. Stop doing only cardio. Hours on the treadmill isn’t the answer. After 40, every year you don’t strength train, you lose muscle. Less muscle = slower metabolism. Lift. Heavy. Twice a week minimum.
❌3. Stop snacking all day. The “6 small meals” advice was bad in 2005 and it’s still bad now. Constant grazing keeps insulin elevated all day, which keeps you in fat-storage mode. 3 to 4 solid meals. That’s it.
❌4. Stop weighing yourself every morning. The scale is lying to you. Hormones, water, sodium, sleep, and cycle phase move that number 2 to 4 pounds either direction on any given day. Measure inches. Take photos. Notice how your clothes fit.
❌5. Stop skipping protein at breakfast. Coffee, a granola bar, or a yogurt parfait with 8 grams of protein sets up your blood sugar, hunger hormones, and cravings to wreck your whole day. 30 grams of protein before 10am. Non-negotiable.
