May is EDS & HSD Awareness Month — a time to bring more understanding to conditions that are often misunderstood, dismissed, or oversimplified.

We’re honoring the EDS/HSD community and reminding you: your symptoms are real, your body is not “too complicated,” and care should meet you where you are.

Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are connective tissue disorders that can affect the joints, skin, blood vessels, organs, and overall body systems. Hypermobility spectrum disorders can also cause joint instability, pain, fatigue, and nervous system stress.

At Hands on Health, we support hypermobile bodies with care that is gentle, intentional, and rooted in the whole person. Through hands-on manual therapy, nervous system-informed treatment, breathwork, movement education, and strength-building, we help create more stability, ease, and trust in the body.

Our goal is not to force the body into change, but to help relieve tension, reduce flare patterns, improve mobility, and support the systems that may be working overtime to keep you together.

If you are living with EDS, HSD, hypermobility, or symptoms that feel difficult to explain, we would be honored to help you feel more supported in your body.

If this feels like your story, we’d be delighted to support you. Please call (504) 481-9688 to connect with Hands on Health.

Deeper healing often begins when the body feels safe enough to slow down.

Check out our daily reset below. It's a gentle way to support your nervous system, digestion, and sleep. Dr. Kelly suggests if you are experiencing a flare of your symptoms, then practice daily for 1 to 2 weeks, non-negotiable, to help regulate your nervous system for more lasting results.

Morning (10–15 min):
- No phone immediately on waking
- Light exposure + slow walking if possible
- 2–5 minutes of longer exhale breathing (exhale longer than inhale)

- Midday (5–10 min):
- Downshift break: sit with eyes soft and hand on your chest/abdomen
- Slow nasal breathing only

Evening (20–30 min wind-down buffer):
- No emotionally activating conversations/texting
- Warm shower or heat on abdomen
- Light reading or neutral TV only

This is more than “self-care”—this is autonomic downtraining for GI healing and sleep restoration. Gentle repetition is how the nervous system learns.

At Hands on Health, our approach is rooted in creating space for intentional, individualized healing. As an out-of-network, cash-based physical therapy clinic, we are able to spend one-on-one time with you to truly listen, understand your needs, and support your healing without the limitations often placed by insurance companies.

Depending on your plan, you may still be eligible for reimbursement through your out-of-network benefits.

To support you in this process, we’ve created a simple guide to help you better understand your coverage and know what to ask your provider.

You can find it on our homepage (handsonhealthnola.com) under the “Do you take insurance?” section.

We’re always here to help you navigate your options—so you can focus on what matters most: your healing.

How does a baby’s nervous system state impact feeding? On this episode of The Mind Body Connection, Dr. Kelly Davis welcomes Ashley Waguespack, MS, LOTR—pediatric OT and host of the Feeding Solutions podcast. A seasoned pediatric Occupational Therapist and Certified Lactation Counselor with over 20 years of experience, Ashley specializes in sensory integration and supporting families through feeding difficulties and Tethered Oral Tissue (TOTS) at her practice, Sensory Solutions.

She brings this extensive expertise to explore how feeding intersects with whole-body wellness, airway health, and family co-regulation.

We dive into:
- The OT Lens: Moving beyond milk intake to sensory and regulatory aspects.
- Co-regulation: How the parent-baby dynamic influences feeding stress.
- Interdisciplinary Care: Bridging gaps between disciplines for early intervention.
- Practical Strategies: Regulating the nervous system at home and supporting infant development through tummy time.
- The Airway Connection: How sensory processing and oral function impact breathing.

Our goal is for this conversation to help parents feel less overwhelmed and inspire providers to think more collaboratively.
