Juneteenth, short for “June Nineteenth,” is an annual federal holiday commemorating the day in 1865 when many enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were free. Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day and Emancipation Day in many communities, it is the largest and most widespread emancipation celebration in the United States. Whether you’re taking the day to reflect or celebrating at events across NYC, we hope your holiday is meaningful.

Hats off to dads and father figures!

Our auditorium has transformed into a lively hattery filled with color, creativity and laughter. In anticipation of Father’s Day, residents are designing one-of-a-kind hats adorned with feathers, ribbons and personal touches during an art therapy session led by our therapeutic recreation team.

Hands-on moments like this at MJHS Menorah Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care do more than inspire beautiful designs, big smiles and stories about dads. They help strengthen fine motor skills, stimulate cognitive function and encourage meaningful self-expression, all while making space to honor, reflect or remember.

Rabbi Rudansky’s presence—whether listening, helping MJHS Hospice patients be at peace, supporting families at any hour or being there for colleagues—helps ensure individuals experiencing an end-of-life journey feel heard, respected as well as cared for with compassion, dignity and respect.

“I’m a rabbi but my role goes far beyond religion,” he says. “At MJHS Hospice, I support patients, families and colleagues by listening intently and asking thoughtful questions that help people find their own answers. Our conversations might include life review, coping strategies, preparing for a loss or discussing the dying process, along with prayer, funeral planning and burial arrangement.” Rabbi Rudansky adds, “I’m often on call at night when pain and loneliness can feel most intense for patients and their loved ones. In those moments, I listen and help patients as well as families navigate whatever they’re feeling and thinking—such as fear, stress, anxiety, uncertainty, peace, relief, hope, grief or a host of other emotions. I also support colleagues as they process the loss of their patients. Sometimes it’s not what you say but how you show up. Every day I say it’s an honor to be part of someone’s end-of-life journey.”

Thank you rabbi for all you do.
