Your Hands at Work 🖐

Typing, using tools, lifting, gripping and other repetitive movements can put a lot of stress on your hands and wrists. Over time, repetitive strain can lead to pain, stiffness, numbness or weakness.

Protect your hands at work by:

• Taking regular breaks from repetitive tasks
• Stretching your fingers, hands and wrists throughout the day
• Using proper technique when lifting or gripping
• Adjusting your workstation to keep your wrists in a neutral position
• Paying attention to persistent pain, numbness or tingling

If hand or wrist discomfort is affecting your work, we can help. The specialists at the Orthopaedic Associates Hand Center of Evansville provide expert care for conditions affecting the hands, wrists and elbows.

The Anatomy of an ACL Tear

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a key ligament in the knee that helps provide stability during movement. It connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia) and helps control twisting and forward motion of the knee.

ACL tears commonly happen during sports that involve jumping, pivoting, or sudden changes in direction, including soccer, basketball, football, and volleyball.

Common signs of an ACL tear include:

• A popping sensation at the time of injury
• Swelling that develops quickly
• Knee pain or difficulty walking
• A feeling that the knee is unstable or "giving out"

While not every ACL injury can be prevented, strength training, balance exercises, and proper movement techniques can help reduce risk.

If you injure your knee, don't try to play through the pain. Our sports medicine specialists can help diagnose your injury and create a plan to get you back to the activities you love most.

Mother's Wrist: More Common Than You Think
Also known as De Quervain's tenosynovitis, Mother's Wrist is caused by irritation of the tendons at the base of the thumb. It commonly develops in new parents from repeatedly lifting and carrying a baby, but anyone who performs frequent gripping, lifting, or repetitive hand motions can develop it.

Common symptoms include:

• Pain at the base of the thumb or wrist
• Swelling near the base of the thumb
• Pain when gripping, pinching, or lifting
• Difficulty moving the thumb or wrist

The good news? When treated early, Mother's Wrist often responds well to conservative care, which may include activity modifications, bracing, hand therapy, anti inflammatory medication, or corticosteroid injections.

If wrist pain is making it harder to care for your little one or do the activities you enjoy, our hand and wrist specialists are here to help you get back to what matters most.
