Happy Mother's Day, Moms!!! [pup/pet-Moms, people (biological, adoptive, step) Moms, Aunties, Momma figures, future Moms, etc.]

"If you go looking for something, you'll find it." Many of us have heard the saying (or the like).

The context in which we have heard it may vary.
It might even be a bit of a trigger for some.
I get it.

However, the sentiment is the same, all things considered, and in a healthy context, that is.

I'd even venture to say that the desire to keep looking is your intuition. Your Spirit trying to let you know what's up.

Seek, and you shall find, right!

So, there are times when you NEED TO KEEP LOOKING!

Well, the same holds true in healthcare when you've done "everything right."

You've tried the medications.
You've been to the appointments.
You've asked the questions.

And still you know something ain't right!

Here are a few labs that might not have been checked, in the cases when women come to me saying, "I've tried everything." "Nothing is getting better." "I felt worse on that medication." "Treatment resistant." "Everything looks normal," that might explain a lot!

🔥hs-CRP catches inflammation years before it shows up as disease.
🧠COMT explains why stress hits you harder, why hormones feel impossible, why meds don't work the way they should
🥺MTHFR reveals why your body might not be using the nutrients it needs to protect your heart, your brain, and your mood.

There are times when those persistent and negative mental (and physical) health symptoms do have a biological cause rather than or in combination with a psychological one.

It's actually common.
Testable.
And, unfortunately, often completely overlooked, especially for "strong," Black women leaders, role models, and game changers.

You're not imagining it.
You're not being dramatic.
Something very well might be being missed.

And that's exactly what we're going to talk about in my Investigative Health Workshop for Black Women Leaders on Wednesday, May 13 at 7PM EST!

You'll learn the 3 keys to finally getting answers, accurate diagnoses, and effective treatment, even when every doctor has told you "everything looks normal."

Because you deserve more than being made to feel like it is all in your head.

You deserve to feel like yourself again.

🙋🏾‍♀️For the Black woman who's doing all the right things, and still not getting any better...

You've followed your doctor's orders. Tried what feels like every medication.
Showed up to every appointment prepared to give the 'right' answers.
And you still don't feel like yourself, or anywhere close to what you expected.

Here's why (and say it aloud with me)...

"Doing all the right things versus doing all the right things for me.”

Those are two very different things. Which is why the outcomes vary!

Let's make it real right quick.

"Eat less, move more" can be 'right' except for when your brain and stomach no longer communicate via your hunger and fullness hormones. Or when that 10-out-of-10 back pain makes moving the last thing you want to do, or can do!

Wellbutrin. Lexapro. Adderall. Vraylar.Medications that work great...and not so great at the same time, if what's actually needed is Somatic Experiencing Therapy.

Reporting symptoms of distractibility, missed deadlines, low motivation, irritability, poor follow-through, and avoidance, but not getting an ADHD diagnosis. Because you weren't diagnosed with it in childhood. Because you're a whole BOSS. Or because the criteria for the ADHD diagnosis wasn't based on someone who looks like you.

Lab reference ranges, diagnoses, prescriptions for exercise, medication, nutrition, therapy, recommendations, or the things you do in general, aren't wrong in and of themselves.

But without investigation, context, and consideration of culture, environment, nuance, s*x, gender, s*xism, racism, or the outcome you're actually looking for, they aren’t “doing all the right things.”

And that, my friend, is how it's possible to do everything right and still not get better.

This is the difference between healthcare and personalized healthcare.

And if you know a leader, role model, and game changer who (because things can be true and exist at the same time) also experiences persistent, negative mental (or physical) health symptoms, has done everything right, but "nothing" seems to work, is taking the medications, but not feeling any better, or is experiencing medication side effects...

High-functioning, but exhausted and in pain? High-achieving, but can’t get the mood swings under control? High-performing, but anxious and irritable while getting things done?

🩺Seen the doctors.
🧪Done the labs.
💊Tried the medications and the supplements.
❤️‍🩹Therapy, too.

But the symptoms (the mood swings, anxiety, irritability, distractibility, exhaustion, broken sleep, medication side effects, memory changes, etc.) persist and have gotten worse.

And, still, no answers.

But on paper, and outside looking in?

Life must be great, and the doctor says, “Everything looks normal.”

And, perhaps this is why Black women experience disproportionately higher rates or severity of...

Inflammation, misdiagnoses, autoimmune disease, missed diagnoses, late diagnoses, premature and preventable loss of life.

As time goes on, it begins to feel like my brain, body, and or "my mind is playing tricks on me."

Yet, there is an inner knowing that something is not right, and is being missed, dismissed, or ignored.

But what?!

Here's what I've learned, after almost 15 years of practicing root-cause family medicine & psychiatry.

When these women finally come to see me, we investigate, and we find that:

Nobody looked at their unique (hi)story.

Nobody dug into the connection between life experiences, whether lived, witnessed, or passed down, and how they impacted their genetics and the persistent symptoms.

Nobody considered how “normal” lab results did not mean “normal” or optimal for them!

Nobody sought to uncover 'the biological why' before diagnosing or prescribing!

The symptoms, side effects, and "nothing" working despite trying "everything" weren't all in their head.

It wasn’t “just stress.”

And it was rarely “treatment resistance.”

They were UNINVESTIGATED!

So I made this free 30-minute video (webinar) to walk you through how Black women are FINALLY getting ANSWERS (uncovering the root cause behind the persistent symptoms), WITHOUT being dismissed, medicated, or told “Everything looks normal.”

🙋🏾‍♀️Woman to woman, and Black woman to Black woman…

I know I talk about labs A LOT.

And there’s a reason.

Because labs are often the missing piece behind:

• mental health symptoms and diagnoses
• physical health symptoms and diagnoses
• medications not working
• misdiagnoses
• multiple medications
• declining health
• early chronic disease
• and even premature death

Here’s what I mean.

Antidepressants can’t compete with inflammation.

Deep breathing can’t compete with magnesium deficiency.

Telling someone to “just think before you act” can’t compete with a VAL/VAL COMT, where the brain has very little dopamine available.

Exercise can’t compete with high oxidized-LDL.

Biology (almost) always wins when you wait or do nothing.

And unfortunately, Black women are impacted by many of these patterns at higher rates.

Not because being Black or being a woman causes these problems.

But because persistent "stress" does.

Covert and overt Racism.
Constant pressure.
Real or perceived threat to safety or livelihood.
The “never let them see you sweat” culture that we had to adapt to, for survival purposes, even!

ALL of that affects our biology.

Which is why race and s*x must ALWAYS be considered in healthcare.

And why labs must be checked and interpreted based on the person in front of us, and not "the majority."

Because things DO look different.

And acting like they don't has real consequences.

So today I want you to do a quick reality check.

Pull up your last labs and see...

“But did they check these...?”
🧪 Magnesium RBC
🧪 Zinc RBC
🧪 Copper RBC
🧪 Oxidized LDL
🧪 Vitamin D
🧪 hs-CRP
🧪 DHEA-S
🧪 Vitamin B6
🧪 CoQ10
🧪 Omega-3 Index
🧪 Whole Blood Histamine
🧪 Homocysteine

If you don’t see them, that tells us something important, and your current health might already be showing what that something is.

This is the work I do.

Helping Black women read between the lines of “everything looks normal,” and finally understand what their mind, brain, and body have been trying to say all along.

So, how many of the 12 that I listed have been checked?

👉🏾If you want, DM me, or drop the number in the comments!

I’m trying to see something
