Neuropsychological evaluation or psychological evaluation? 🧠

They’re not the same—and knowing the difference matters.

A neuropsychological evaluation looks at how your brain is working, including memory, attention, learning, and executive function.

A psychological evaluation focuses more on emotional and mental health, such as anxiety, mood, and behavior.

Different questions. Different tools. Different answers.

Not sure which evaluation may be right for you? We’re here to help. 💙

📍 Serving children, teens, and adults in Norwood, MA and beyond.

Your mental health deserves care, too. 🤍

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it looks like:

✨ Getting enough sleep
✨ Moving your body
✨ Eating regular meals
✨ Taking a break
✨ Connecting with someone you trust
✨ Making time for things you enjoy

And sometimes, self-care means asking for help.

If changes in your mood, sleep, appetite, focus, or interest in things you enjoy last 2 weeks or more, consider talking with a healthcare provider.

You don’t have to wait until you’re overwhelmed to reach out. 🤍

Save this as a reminder to care for your mind, too.

Why does a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation matter? 🧠

A neuropsychological evaluation is much more than a few brief questionnaires or screening measures. While screeners can identify possible areas of concern, they cannot provide the same depth, precision, or diagnostic clarity as a comprehensive evaluation conducted by a psychologist with specialized training in neuropsychological assessment.

A neuropsych evaluation integrates multiple sources of information—including cognitive testing, attention and executive functioning, memory, language, emotional functioning, developmental and medical history, behavioral observations, and collateral information—to understand not just whether symptoms are present, but why they are occurring.

This is especially important because conditions such as ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, trauma, learning disorders, and other neurological or developmental concerns can have overlapping symptoms.

Screeners can point you in a direction. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation helps determine what is actually driving the difficulties—and what to do about them.

Accurate diagnosis leads to more individualized recommendations, more appropriate treatment, and a clearer understanding of a person’s unique strengths and challenges.

Noticing more “senior moments” lately? You’re not alone.

We all forget a name, misplace our keys, or walk into a room and forget why we’re there.

But when changes in memory, attention, or thinking become more frequent—or start interfering with everyday life—it may be time to take a closer look.

A neuropsychological evaluation can help provide a clearer picture of how the brain is functioning and identify areas that may need further attention.

And remember: memory changes don’t automatically mean Alzheimer’s disease. There are many possible reasons someone may experience changes in cognition.

Getting answers early can also give you and your family more time to understand what’s happening, explore appropriate options, and plan ahead.

❤️ If you’re concerned about cognitive changes in yourself or someone you love, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Your Brain on Substances: Everyday Cognition Matters

Alcohol and other substances can affect more than mood or behavior. They may temporarily—or, with ongoing heavy use, more persistently—interfere with attention, memory, processing speed, sleep, judgment, and the ability to plan, organize, and manage emotions.

In daily life, this can look like forgetting conversations, losing track of tasks, feeling mentally “foggy,” making more impulsive decisions, or struggling to keep up at work, school, or home.

Many people notice improvement when they reduce use, build recovery supports, and address contributing factors such as sleep, stress, mood, or medical concerns.

If changes in memory, focus, or daily functioning are concerning, a neuropsychological evaluation can help clarify the pattern and identify practical supports.

It can help identify patterns, strengths, challenges, and practical supports.

Think a neuropsychological evaluation starts with testing? Think again. 🧠

The evaluation actually begins before you take a single test.

First comes the intake—where we learn about your concerns, history, symptoms, and goals.

Then, relevant medical, educational, and psychological records may be reviewed.

You may also complete questionnaires about attention, memory, mood, behavior, and daily functioning.

Why all the preparation?

Because your evaluation is about more than test scores.

We’re looking at the bigger picture to better understand how you think, learn, remember, and function.

Before testing day:

✔️ Get a good night’s sleep
✔️ Take medications as prescribed
✔️ Bring glasses or hearing aids
✔️ Give yourself plenty of time to arrive
