Could there be more to your child's reading struggles? 📚
Sometimes, a child who is struggling to read needs more than extra practice.
Reading is built on a foundation of many skills: speech, language, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and literacy skills. When one or more pieces of that foundation are difficult, it can affect how a child learns to read.

As a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist with Orton-Gillingham training I love helping families better understand why their child may be struggling to read.
I offer private dyslexia and literacy evaluations using the Tests of Dyslexia (TOD) by WPS, along with additional measures selected on a case-by-case basis to better understand your child's individual strengths and areas of need.

My goal is to help answer questions like:
📖 Is my child behind for their age in reading?
🧩 Could speech or language skills be affecting their reading development?
🔤 Are they struggling with the underlying skills needed for decoding and spelling?
💡 What are their strengths?
➡️ And most importantly...what should we do next?
An evaluation isn't just about identifying what a child struggles with. It's about understanding the whole picture and creating a clearer path forward.

Sound familiar? 😊

Questions are a natural part of communication, and asking your toddler an occasional question isn't harmful. But when most of our interactions start to sound like a quiz, it can unintentionally change the rhythm of play.

Imagine sitting down with a friend and, instead of responding to what you said, they constantly asked you to identify things or prove what you knew.
What is that?
What color is it?
What sound does it make?

You might eventually stop wanting to participate.

For early communicators especially, repeated questions can add pressure to an interaction that should feel playful and natural.

Instead of always asking for an answer, try mixing in:
💬 Comments: “You found the dog!”
💭 Wondering aloud: “Hmm...I wonder where it went?”
🪞 Imitation: Repeat their sound, word, or action.
➕ Expansion: Child says “car” → “Fast car!”
⏸️ Wait time: Say something, then pause and give them a chance to respond.

The goal isn't to eliminate questions. The goal is to make sure your child gets to experience real back-and-forth communication (not just a series of questions with right answers)

Sometimes, the best way to help a child learn to communicate is simply to show them that communication is enjoyable 🗣️👶🥰

It's rooted in developmental psychology, children learn values from what adults consistently prioritize.
Attending Baby Bookclub and reading aloud from a young age become a part of your family's culture around books and learning.

We often think about what we want to teach our children.

But just as important is what we're prioritizing, and demonstrating for them.
When families set aside one evening each month for Baby Bookclub, they're communicating something powerful without saying a word.
📚 Reading is worth making time for.
❤️Learning is something our family enjoys together.
🌱 Curiosity matters.
🤝 Community matters.
✨ Books are fun.
Children don't just learn from what we tell them, they learn from what we consistently prioritize.

The traditions we create today help shape how they view books, learning, and time together for years to come.

My hope has always been for Baby Bookclub to be more than story time. I want it to become a family outing that builds memories, meaningful connections, and a foundation for the lifelong love of books and learning.

I've been making the cutest little octopi in speech therapy 🐙 "How to Get Your Octopus to School" by Becky Scharnhorst has been a great way to target speech sounds, "what" and "where" questions, past tense verbs, longer utterances, yes/no questions, & more!
