Sunday evening PSA for anyone whose lab order has been living on the fridge since spring.

Understanding your lab report.

You get a text that says results are ready, you open the portal, and it's a wall of abbreviations with a couple numbers flagged in red. Then you wait three days for a callback while you Google yourself into a panic.

So we wrote the thing we wish somebody had handed us. Plain English. What CBC actually measures. Why your ALT might be up. What the difference is between borderline and actually concerning. What that little H or L next to your number really means.

Here's the part most people don't know. About 5 percent of perfectly healthy people fall outside the reference range on any given test just by chance. One flagged value on its own usually doesn't mean much. Context is everything, which is why your doctor looks at it next to your symptoms and your meds and your history instead of just the number.

This isn't a substitute for your doctor and we're not trying to be one. It's so you walk into that conversation knowing what you're looking at instead of nodding along.
