Recently, several WAFCC AmeriCorps members attended the Governor’s Service Awards, an annual event hosted by Serve Wisconsin to recognize outstanding volunteers, AmeriCorps members, and service programs that make a positive impact in communities across the state. The awards celebrate individuals whose dedication and commitment help address critical community needs and improve the lives of people throughout Wisconsin.

The day began with a hands-on service project, followed by a celebration recognizing this year’s award nominees and honorees. The event provided a valuable opportunity for AmeriCorps members from across the state to connect, share experiences, and build relationships with fellow service members

WAFCC was especially proud to see one of its AmeriCorps members recognized during the event. Elizabeth Reynolds, who serves at Waukesha Free Clinic, was nominated for the AmeriCorps Member of the Year Award. In recognition of their nomination and commitment to serving patients and the community, Elizabeth received a certificate from Governor Tony Evers!

As WAFCC is nearing the close another impactful year of service, WAFCC's AmeriCorps Service Celebration brought members together to reflect on their accomplishments, strengthen connections, and give back to the community one final time. The day featured a park clean-up service project in Madison, team-building activities, and an opportunity to celebrate the dedication and impact of our members across Wisconsin. We are grateful for their commitment to advancing health equity and improving access to care, and we look forward to seeing the continued difference they make in their communities in the future!

AmeriCorps Spotlight: Meet Kelsyn at Perry Family Free Clinic in Madison, WI!

Each day begins before the first patient arrives. Mornings are spent preparing the clinic by organizing materials, reviewing schedules, and helping ensure that everything is ready to run smoothly. Once the clinic opens, the pace picks up quickly. Patients begin arriving, many of whom have delayed care due to cost, access, or past barriers within the healthcare system. Kelsyn assists with intake, paperwork, and answering questions, helping to create a welcoming environment.

On non-clinical days, Kelsyn, along with another AmeriCorps member, often go to homeless shelters and the Madison Public Library to engage with people in the community, share information about services, and build trust. These outreach efforts help ensure that care is not only available but also accessible and known within the neighborhood.

For Kelsyn, one of the most meaningful aspects of the work is engaging with a unique patient population and encountering a wide range of medical cases, often supporting individuals who have postponed care.

Kelsyn plans to pursue PA school, carrying forward a commitment to serving underserved communities. Her experiences have helped shape both her career path and her commitment to equitable care!

AmeriCorps Spotlight: Meet Jamila at Madison Street Medicine in Madison, WI!

As an AmeriCorps member with Madison Street Medicine, Jamila balances administrative support and community outreach. Her work includes grant writing, workflow improvement, training materials development, grant tracking, and program support. She has submitted 18 grant proposals, helped raise approximately $25,000 through fundraising campaigns, and recently shifted focus to Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) analysis to better understand and address the needs of the unhoused community. In addition to her administrative responsibilities, Jamila participates in outreach trips, supports the Foot Care Clinic, and assists with the Point-in-Time (PIT) count. These experiences have reinforced the importance of compassion, patience, and kindness in both her professional and personal life.

Looking ahead, Jamila hopes to use her Education Award to take Arabic courses and support her future medical school applications. She looks forward to continuing her service as an AmeriCorps State and National Member with MSM, before continuing her path toward a career in genetics and medicine!

AmeriCorps Spotlight: Meet Pauline serving at St. Clare Health Mission in La Crosse, WI!

While Pauline’s service consists of various tasks, her main focus is with two projects: the Diabetic QI Project and leading the initiative of transitioning from paper charts to Electronic Medical Records (EMR).

Pauline led a quality improvement project to increase statin use among diabetic patients and strengthen collaboration between providers and pharmacists. By identifying eligible patients, connecting them with pharmacists for education, and supporting a Collaborative Practice Agreement, she helped raise statin use from 53% to 63%. The project has improved patient awareness, expanded pharmacist involvement in care, and enhanced the clinic’s approach to diabetes management.

Pauline’s second major project is leading the clinic’s transition from paper charts to an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. She researched vendors, evaluated system options, and worked with staff to select a platform that aligns with the clinic’s needs. She is now helping coordinate implementation, including staff testing, data migration, and ensuring compatibility with community partners and hospitals. Once in place, the EMR system will improve patient communication, reporting, scheduling, and support ongoing quality improvement initiatives.

Beyond her primary projects, Pauline helps wherever needed! Her flexibility and problem-solving help keep clinic operations running smoothly!

Pauline wants to continue using her clinical experiences in her public health work while also leveraging the knowledge she has gained from being an AmeriCorps member. She has gained interest in preventative care at a population level and is excited to further explore how she can support communities and help improve access to healthcare!

Throughout the day, Julie coordinates appointments and follow-ups, assists providers and volunteers, and connects patients to additional resources. Julie values the opportunity to directly support patients and lower barriers, building on her prior experience as a CNA. On non-clinical days, Julie, along with another AmeriCorps member, often go to homeless shelters and the Madison Public Library to engage with people in the community, share information about services, and build trust. These outreach efforts help ensure that care is not only available but also accessible and known within the neighborhood.

Through her service, Julie has developed strong communication and leadership skills, gaining confidence in working with patients, providers, and community members. She has also learned how nonprofit clinics rely heavily on volunteers and donations to operate.

Julie is preparing for medical school with an interest in primary care and may return to continue supporting the clinic!

The Specialty Care Free Clinic (SCFC) is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year! Specialty Care Free Clinic was started in 2001 by three local physicians, Ernie Pellegrino, Paul Simenstad, and Walter Sundstrom, who saw the health disparities between patients in their practices who were uninsured vs those who were insured. Their legacy is SCFC.

In South Central Wisconsin, Specialty Care Free Clinic stands alone as the only clinic providing a comprehensive spectrum of specialty medical care to low-income, uninsured patients. Their goal is simple but powerful: to help patients achieve better health so they can become thriving, contributing members of their community. The clinic is truly a community powered by volunteers. To bring this vision to life, the clinic has built an extraordinary network of 130+ volunteers, including more than 45 physicians spanning 21 specialties!

As the need for specialty care continues to grow, so does the urgency to expand the clinic’s network of volunteers. They have recently added new specialties to their services, but there is still a significant need for providers in a variety of specialties! AmeriCorps Spotlight: Meet Elizabeth serving at Waukesha Free Clinic in Waukesha, WI!

Elizabeth’s day blends data management, community outreach, and patient support. Daily tasks include checking in patients, assisting with paperwork, and maintaining accurate records.

Much of Elizabeth’s work happens behind the scenes. They are leading the clinic’s transition to the Wisconsin Care Hub, a new software system that will improve tracking for patients with long-term conditions and help manage the approximately 250 new patients the clinic serves each year. They also research grant opportunities, support the clinic’s annual fundraising gala through sponsorship and donation coordination, and manage monthly social media content that highlights the clinic’s mission and impact.

Beyond their core responsibilities, Elizabeth has developed a deeper appreciation for community and connection. They describe their team as a close-knit group of compassionate individuals, supported by a supervisor who is consistently present for AmeriCorps members. Through daily interactions, Elizabeth has even picked up some Spanish, an unexpected but valuable skill.

Looking ahead, Elizabeth plans to complete a Master of Public Health program at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, where they will focus on public health policy. Their long-term goal is to expand access to care through policy work. Though their AmeriCorps service term is ending, Elizabeth says they will always carry a piece of the Waukesha Free Clinic with them and hopes to remain involved in supporting its mission!
