Congratulations to incoming intern, Dr. Lauren Simonian, on receiving the 2026 H.H. Sankey Award. Dr. Simonian will begin her residency this July.

Harold Henderson Sankey, M.D., for whom the Sankey Award is named, was one of the earliest Orthopedic Surgeons to practice in Pittsburgh. In response to the growing poliomyelitis epidemic of the early 20th century, each county in Pennsylvania had its own Children’s Clinic. Dr. Sankey ran a clinic northeast of the city, and referred many patients to Pittsburgh's Children's Hospital. Dr. Sankey enjoyed working with the residents at Pitt and was passionate about education, and his students welcomed his lessons and insights. The H.H. Sankey Award has continued for over 50 years as a testament to his interest in and commitment to orthopedic education.

We are proud to share that MaCalus V. Hogan, MD, MBA, was selected to receive the UNCF Bill Nunn Legacy of Excellence Award at a special celebration held at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center in Pittsburgh.

This event honors the enduring legacy of Bill Nunn, Jr., whose leadership helped reshape the NFL by expanding pathways for talent from historically Black colleges and universities and advancing equity across the league.

Dr. Hogan was recognized for his leadership and commitment to excellence. The celebration was chaired by Collette V. Smith, the first African American female coach in NFL history, and brought together leaders whose work reflects Bill Nunn Jr.’s transformative influence.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Hogan on this well‑deserved honor.
