Strategy Milling

Strategy Milling Innovator of milled precious metals for dental in North America. Strategy Milling believes in challenging what has become the status quo. We decided on Roeders.

The Strategy Message

We believe gold is the premier material for posterior dental restorations. When comparing gold alloy’s characteristics: hardness, antagonistic wear, malleability, biocompatibility, ease of cementation and removal, as well as perhaps the longest standing positive track record of any material ever used in restoring posterior teeth compared to any other prosthetic material; gold

cannot be beat as a restorative material choice. Other milling materials are comparatively inexpensive in their "raw" form, and manufacturing these into a useable product has provided them to the industry as relatively inexpensive restorative options. That does not override our belief that if a characteristic comparison were to be made between these other materials and gold; they would fall short. A 2012 nationwide survey of dentists showed that 80.94% believe gold is the best material for restoring posterior teeth. We realized a unique opportunity in the marketplace as a precious metal refiner with a high dental IQ among its staff, and began to think differently about how we could challenge the competition for posterior restorations. How could we play a role in restoring a timeless restoration to its proper standing in the marketplace? As we observe the increase in digitization of dental processes, which enable laboratories to manufacture more efficiently and at lower cost; during the simultaneous increase of precious metal prices, it begs the question, “How can we facilitate a shift to bring this great product back to the position it formerly held as an incredibly successful material of choice?”

Approximately 30 different milling machines were investigated then distilled to three companies. We interviewed the manufacturers to determine the best mill for the job, as well as the best company to support our business model needs. We wanted robust, high precision mills and purchased three Roeders RXD5 machines. We wanted automation to handle lights out operation for up to 72 hours and added Roeders RCS-1 Automation Robots and Magazines to each mill. We needed a supply of gold discs to mill and spent approximately one year in research and development creating a one of a kind proprietary process that produces relatively porosity-free gold pucks of different thicknesses, in-house for our own consumption. “Atlantic”, a state-of-the-art precious metal refiner, is able to refine precious metal scrap back to pure elements. Atlantic has the necessary tools in place to create, monitor, maintain and test our alloys with laser and inductively coupled spectrograph technology. These technologies and our trained staff are what allow us to quickly evaluate any lot of metal, determine its elemental makeup vs. its standard, make any adjustments necessary, and consistently produce the next lot of alloy for the mills. It makes sense that usage of gold alloy substructures and gold crown restorations would decline, as gold prices grow higher, thus becoming prohibitive for doctors to prescribe. Now labs have an alternative that has never been seen before, the Direct CAD/CAM all-gold crown. As long as gold crowns are still being produced in the marketplace; and there is a proven resource that has invested in the best technology available to provide more economical product, a Direct CAD/CAM Gold crown makes great sense if one needs to be fabricated. We are Strategy Milling; the first large-scale, commercially viable source for Direct CAD/CAM milled gold crowns in North America.

From case file to milling in about 20 minutes per unit. ⚙️

When a milled custom abutment case comes in, every detail is verified first: the correct component, proper orientation, and accurate CAM setup.

From there, the abutment is loaded, the job is selected, and the mill gets to work.

A streamlined workflow built around precision, consistency, and efficiency.

Meet Sarah, one of the newest members of the Strategy Milling team. 👋

With a background in UX/UI design, Sarah is already putting her skills to work inside our digital workflow.

Here, she’s taking a client file into our software and preparing it for CAD as part of the process of creating a cobalt chrome bridge.

Great technology is only part of the equation. It’s the people behind it who bring the process to life.

Welcome to the team, Sarah!

Quality is the metric that matters most.

At Strategy Milling, we measure success by our external remake rate because every part we manufacture has an impact beyond our facility.

It impacts the laboratory receiving it. The doctor placing it. The patient depending on it for years to come.

As dentistry continues moving from analog to digital, the opportunity is to build manufacturing processes that create greater precision, consistency, and confidence throughout the entire workflow.

We’re medical device manufacturers. That responsibility shapes the standard we set for every part we produce.

Your expectation is the best. Our job is to keep working toward delivering it.

Ready to bring more precision and consistency to your workflow? Connect with Strategy Milling.

Would we do it differently if we started Strategy Milling over today?

It’s hard to separate what we would change from everything the journey taught us.

Every win, every challenge, and every lesson along the way showed us what worked, what needed to change, and where we could improve.

You don’t build a better process by getting everything right the first time. You build it by paying attention, learning, and continuing to refine.

Those experiences helped shape the processes, standards, and mindset Strategy Milling is built on today.

What lessons have shaped the way you work today?

Some processes work for thousands of years… until technology shows us what’s possible next.

As digital dentistry advanced, milling cobalt chrome and titanium revealed an opportunity: bring that same precision and efficiency to precious metals.

That meant rethinking the process and finding a way to manufacture precious metal pucks specifically for modern digital workflows.

Innovation doesn’t always mean replacing what worked. Sometimes it means finding a better way to move it forward.

What advancement has made the biggest difference in your digital workflow?

Some stories begin long before the technology. They begin with family.

Strategy Milling’s connection to Pittsburgh goes back to a father who built his career as a dental technician, owned a dental lab, served as president of the PDL, and passed his passion for the craft on to the next generation.

Years later, he got to step inside Strategy Milling and watch modern mills produce work with speed and precision that showed just how far the profession had come from their days together at the bench.

Even the logo carries a piece of that family history forward.

Different generations. Evolving technology. The same respect for the craft. For Strategy Milling, Pittsburgh will always represent family, legacy, and the future of dental technology.

Meet Josh - one of the people behind the production at Strategy Milling. 👋

For the past 3½ years, Josh has helped manage the production of the pucks that ultimately make their way into our mills.

It’s one of those behind-the-scenes roles that plays an important part in keeping production moving and quality consistent.

Great results start with great people and Josh is part of the team making it happen every day.

What part of the Strategy Milling process should we take you behind the curtain to see next?

14 years of growth, innovation, and manufacturing experience 🤩

Strategy Milling started with the ability to mill a single gold crown. Today, our capabilities include dentures, titanium bars, copings, gold crowns, PMMA, zirconia, and more.

Through every stage of that growth, our focus has remained consistent: progressive manufacturing, highly polished products, reliable results, a low remake rate, and customer service our partners can count on.
