The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as tapping, has helped a number of my patients. šŸ¤—

Tapping on your head and face sends signals to your brain that cross over from one side to the other, like a pendulum, and tells your body that you are present and you are safe. It tells the immune system that it can calm down and turn off the alarms.

Beans are a great source of protein and fiber, which both help to maintain stable sugar levels. Unstable blood sugar levels can affect our mood. 🄓

Beans like garbanzo beans and black-eyed peas also contain high levels of folate, which is a B vitamin that helps the body produce blood cells, DNA, and RNA, and metabolize proteins.

.paria: Home is the body you inhabit.

I tell my patients all the time that you cannot be healthy until the foundations of your health are in order, just as a house can’t stand strong if the structures that hold it up are weak & damaged.

The foundations of your health are eating to nourish your body - this looks like eating ENOUGH & not starving ourselves to fit the mold of the ā€œideal bodyā€ women are fed. This looks like eating nutrient-dense foods that give our body the building blocks it needs to produce healthy hormones & metabolic functions. This includes creating space for indulging in a healthy way that is nourishing to the mind & soul.

The foundations include getting adequate sleep & understanding that rest is a vital part of healing. You cannot heal a body that is run down & does not have the time it needs for repair processes.

Stress management is VITAL. We can’t eliminate all stressors, but we can be kind to ourselves & give ourselves the tools we need to weather the storms that come. This can be through therapy, self-care, journaling, meditation, whatever makes us feel grounded and resilient.

We need movement & exercise to keep our body strong. We need proper hydration, normal bowel movements, healthy & regular cycles.

This year has been a hard one, and I know a lot of us have struggled with the basics. Let’s go into 2021 with the mindset & commitment that, regardless of what happens, we’ll put ourselves & our health first.

Your body is your home & it matters. Take care of it. ā™„ļø

You can’t eliminate every toxin.

The goal isn’t to live in a bubble… it’s to control what you can control.

We’re exposed to chemicals and environmental toxins every day: in food, water, air, personal care products, plastics, medications, and our environment.

For some, toxin exposure may not isn’t make or break your health. But over time, cumulative exposure + individual susceptibility + poor detoxification capacity can contribute to a higher toxic burden and may play a role in chronic health issues.

So don’t obsess over the one ingredient you can’t avoid.

Instead:
• Choose whole, minimally processed foods
• Filter your drinking water
• Reduce unnecessary plastics
• Be intentional with personal care products
• Improve indoor air quality
• Support the body’s natural detoxification pathways
• And most importantly—focus on the big things you can control

You don’t need perfection. You need to reduce the total load.

Your health is influenced by the sum of your exposures.

If you truly believe you are not depressed, start looking for someone who can spend the time with you to sort it out and look for alternative approaches. That’s where functional psychiatry comes in.

🚊 I’m the last stop on the crazy train. It’s time to get off.

šŸ’© Evaluating the consistency and timing of bowel movements tells us a lot about what is going on in the body.

Generally, you will want to have a bowel movement that looks like a snake and isn’t difficult to pass.

It shouldn’t require lots of toilet paper. In fact, using a lot of toilet paper is a sign that you might have dysbiosis, an imbalance of the gut microbiome.

Yes, gluten sensitivity is a real thing. I’ve struggled with it. (And if I’m being honest… I miss eating certain foods. 😫)

I’ve learned over the years that gluten is not my friend. I have a non-celiac gluten sensitivity, which is different from celiac disease—an autoimmune reaction to gluten at the gut lining.

Gluten is a major source of inflammation in some people. Anyone with gut symptoms, autoimmune conditions and depression absolutely should have a trial off of gluten (and dairy due to cross reactivity.)

😯 I had all three and more going on in my body.

However, after some time of feeling well, I did a series of food ā€œexperimentsā€ and found that some sources of gluten were worse than others. It came down to how processed the food was, the source of the wheat and whether it was sprayed with pesticides.

Fresh sourdough bread from a reputable bakery was tolerated better than the ā€œsourdoughā€ bread in the regular grocery store. Pasta made from flour sourced from Italy was better tolerated than pasta made here as our wheat is sprayed with all sorts of chemicals.

I’ve been fine without gluten for the most part (besides missing eating certain foods 😢). It took a while to get here, BUT it was totally worth it as gluten definitely contributes to my joint stiffness, fatigue and brain fog.

šŸ’ŖšŸ¼ I prefer being able to do things as I get older. That’s more important to me. It comes down to choices.

Fortunately, every so often I CAN have and choose to eat Indian samosa dipped in green coriander chutney without too much of a problem. It reminds me of my mom. ā¤ļø

It’s the one thing that I haven’t been able to substitute. Sourcing it from a good Indian restaurant is key. šŸ˜‰
